Calling
All ‘Urban Physicians’ for a World Consultation—STAT!
UIA organizes international ideas
competition
The International Union of Architects has launched “A Celebration
of Cities,” an international ideas competition to collect
ideas and create a global database of inventive ways to repair and
heal the nerve points of the city. Referring to architects and students
of architecture as “urban physicians” the UIA offers
them a special opportunity to make a difference in their communities.
CAJ
Jury Honors 20 Justice Facilities
Two projects receive special citations
A Committee on Architecture for Justice jury has selected 20 projects
for inclusion in the Justice Facilities
Review 2003–2004, to be published this fall. These
projects and their architects will be honored at the second annual
Congress on Infrastructure Security for the Built Environment (ISBE)
September 16–18 in Washington, D.C., in tandem with the CAJ
fall conference. Two projects—a youth facility and a federal
courthouse—particularly captured the jurors’ attention
and will be awarded citations.
SmithGroup’s
Manifest Destiny
Four years before the AIA came into being, Sheldon Smith began what
is now one of the largest and oldest architecture firms in America.
SmithGroup’s 150-year history is a reflection of the history
of the profession of architecture. And its current strategies in
market positioning give us a glimpse into the future as well.

Architecture for the Gods, Book
II
by Michael J. Crosbie, PhD (2003,
Images Publishing)
Architecture for the Gods, Book II,
pays homage to sacred built form and offers a visual banquet for
architects through presentation of more than 50 contemporary projects
representing all faiths. Its author, Michael J. Crosbie, PhD, AIA,
editor of Faith and Form magazine
and adjunct professor of architecture at Roger Williams University,

in the U.S. today. His reasoned presentation is further enhanced
by the exciting visual presentation that is the hallmark of Images

New Indianapolis International Airport
Terminal Design Unveiled
HOK’s structure will be first new
U.S. terminal built since September 11, 2001
Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson, Airport Authority Board President
Lacy M. Johnson, and representatives of HOK’s Aviation Group
publicly unveiled the design for the new Indianapolis International
Airport terminal building August 14. “This design represents
the merging of economic opportunity, arts and culture, and the spirit
of Indianapolis in a single magnificent structure,” Peterson
says. “It is not only a culmination of more than 25 years
of policy and planning, it represents the culmination of the economic
growth of Indiana, a harbinger of future community success, and
a continuation of Indiana’s historic position as Crossroads
of America.”

The Economy: Service jobs, including
design services, are moving overseas. There are positive and negative
repercussions for U.S. architects. Real
Estate: Housing starts will dip slightly, commercial and
public works a bit more. And there’s a word of caution on
REITS. U.S. Security: In many ways,
we’re getting safer. Yet there is much to be done and continuing
demand for security consulting.

BEST
PRACTICES (members only)
Connecting the Dots: Combining CAD Modeling
With Project Management Tools
Four-dimensional modeling software could change the face of the
architecture profession—not only in the way work is getting
done, but also the role that architects will play within the design
and construction process. This emerging technology will incorporate
existent CAD-modeling techniques with scheduling, estimating, sequencing,
fabrication, delivery, and installation information. If we adopt
this technology, says Jonathan Cohen, AIA, of Berkeley, Calif.-based
Jonathan Cohen and Associates, it will offer an opportunity for
architects to expand their sphere by taking on more of the entire
process.
Hot
Stuff: Engineers Host Fire Protection Conference in Baltimore This
Fall
The Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) and the Structural
Engineering Institute (SEI) of the American Society of Civil Engineers
(ASCE) will jointly sponsor the “Designing Structures for
Fire” conference in Baltimore September 30–October 1.
Responding to heightened interest in building performance under
fire conditions following the September 11 terrorist attacks, this
two-day event will serve as a forum for exchange on recent advancements
in fire-resistance design among architects, researchers, fire-protection
engineers, structural engineers, and regulators.
BD&C
Asks: What Next for the Sustainability Movement?
Building Design and Construction
magazine is seeking input for a white paper on sustainability in
commercial, industrial, and institutional construction, particularly
as it relates to the LEED-certification process. The document will
explore the history of the movement—what the top thinkers
and policy makers in the field are saying, what building and construction
personnel are doing about sustainability in their professional work,
and recommendations for next steps. Learn more about the white paper
and share your thoughts.
