Design for Aging Review Nine to Feature 36 State-of-the-Art Projects
Results are in for the 2007 Design for Aging Review (DFAR) Nine, reports Design for Aging Advisory Group Member Mitch Green, AIA. A total of 72 submissions were received from 42 design firms in 27 different states. Projects once again have an international flavor, with representation from both the U.S. and Japan. In the four award categories, there were 56 submissions to Buildings, 8 to Planning, 4 to Concepts, and 4 to Research/Post-Occupancy Evaluations (POEs).
Universal Design Living Laboratory to Be a Sustainable, Healthy Home
Architect Patrick Manley, Manley Architecture Group/MAG, Columbus, Ohio, is teaming with homeowners Rosemarie Rossetti, PhD, and Mark Leder to create a home that showcases universal design, green building, and healthy home construction practices. The Universal Design Living Laboratory will be a teaching tool for the design, building, and architecture communities as well as consumers, especially the Baby Boomers and people with limited mobility.
San Leandro Juvenile Justice Facility Garners Gold
Diverse approach yields benefits for juvenile offenders and the environment
Designed by the San Francisco office of HOK, the Alameda County Juvenile Justice Center is the first and only juvenile justice facility in the U.S. to attain LEED® Gold certification. The justice center, which has exceeded California’s Title 24 energy efficiency standards by over 40 percent, relied on a varied strategy for achieving sustainability that included an 880 kW PV array and bio-diesel excavation and site clearing.
