A New Globe in a New World
Will the British return to establish a beachhead of Anglophile culture in New York City?
Foster + Partners’ design for a new Shakespearian Globe Theater places the auditorium in the circular courtyard of Castle Williams, an early 19th century military base. Instead of precisely recreating the Globe, the firm’s design takes it into the modern world of theater. The proposal is part of a new effort to redesign and develop all of Governor’s Island in New York.

An Unusual Solution for Urban Transportation
Sleek and efficient Portland Aerial Tram connects OHSU campuses
Four years after design selection, the Portland, Ore., Aerial Tram opened for service on January 29, 2007. Designed by the Los Angeles office of Zurich-based Angélil/Graham/Pfenninger/Scholl Architecture, the tram is one of only a handful of aerial trams in the world to exist in a dense urban community. Its urban location and very steep site presented some design challenges that the architects overcame elegantly and efficiently.

Center for the Arts Will Shine in Sun Valley
Kundig selected as architect for Idaho resort town arts center
In the valley beneath Idaho’s Bald Mountain sits the picturesque resort town of Ketchum, Idaho, once a successful mining and sheep trading town. Now a popular snow skiing destination for the West Coast and home to approximately 3,000 residents, the town offers abundant recreational and cultural opportunities. Among its newest offerings will be a facility for the Sun Valley Center for the Arts (SVCA), designed by Tom Kundig, FAIA, principal of Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen in Seattle.
