AIA Dallas program keeps going and growing
Dallas architects want to tell you about the power AIA members have to make a difference in our communities. It was just four years ago that AIA Dallas, in preparation for its role as host of the 1999 AIA national convention, solicited submissions for a Legacy project. Since then, the chapter, its charitable foundation, and its Legacy Committee have taken on or referred several community service projects and have moved the original assignment along to where they are ready to hire an architect to convert dilapidated Parkland Hospital into a modern health-services center. National Trust Names 11 Most Endangered Sites
Projects also to be featured in July 6 History Channel documentary and Atlantic Monthly
Earlier this month, the National Trust for Historic Preservation released its "11 Most Endangered Historic Places" list, which identifies projects—built and natural—threatened by neglect, insufficient funds, inappropriate development, or insensitive public policy. The projects range from ancient Indian burial grounds in the West to the skipjack fleet on the Chesapeake Bay. Full Story

Eco-Charrettes Save Resources, Build Teams
Long recognized among architects as a word connoting quick, efficient project development, CH2M Hill has introduced the charrette to their clients and fellow project-team members as a carefully orchestrated event to encourage creativity and focus on resource efficiency. The result, they are finding, is a better project, more cohesive design team, and delighted clients. Full Story

HONORS AND AWARDS
Honor Those Who Contribute to Society
The Whitney M. Young Jr. Award, conferred annually by the national AIA Board of Directors, honors an architect or architecturally oriented organization that has contributed significantly to fulfilling the profession's responsibility to society. (Nominations are due October 11.) Full Story

Access Board Releases Draft Guidelines for Accessible Rights-of-Way
The U.S. Access Board has released for public comment draft guidelines—developed under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Architectural Barriers Act (ABA)—to cover pedestrian access to sidewalks and streets, including crosswalks, curb ramps, street furnishings, parking, and other components of public rights-of-way. Baylor U. Builds New Sciences Building
Baylor University in Waco, Tex., broke ground last month on the 500,000-square-foot, $1.3 million Baylor Sciences Building, the largest building project in the school's 157-year history. Designed by HarleyEllis, with ARAMARK Facility Services as CPM and the BECK Group as contractor, the facility will house the university's life sciences, physical sciences, and five multidisciplinary research centers in three wings. The four-story structure blends with the campus's historic Georgian architecture.

A Tribute to J. Carter Brown, Hon. AIA
A leading figure in refining the American public's appreciation for art and architecture died June 17. J. Carter Brown, Hon. AIA, director of the National Gallery of Art from 1969 to 1992, jury chair for the Pritzker Prize since its inception, and chair of the Commission of Fine Arts from 1971 until his resignation due to his health on May 30, succumbed to cancer at Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital. He was 67. Full Story

The AIA's member-only Web portal has a direct link to the AIA Risk Management Committee (RMC) articles and reports—your fastest way to get risk management information quickly as it is posted. To put the link on your MyAIA home page, sign on to the Web portal, click the word "Personalize" near the top right-hand side of your "my page," click "Choose tools," scroll down to Risk Management Resource Center and click on the adjacent box, go to the top of that page and click "Finished," then go back to your "my page" where you will find a new icon linking to this new RMC member benefit.
