Hot Dog! New York City’s Butler Rogers
Baskett Architects PC Takes Canstruction® Prize
“An American Classic” created by Butler Rogers Baskett
Architects, P.C., New York City, was proclaimed “Jurors’ Favorite” at
the ninth annual International Canstruction® Competition juried
May 18 in conjunction with the AIA National Convention in Las Vegas.
Canstruction, administered by the Society of Design Administration
(SDA) and held in conjunction with AIA state and local chapters and
allied professional organizations, is an annual charity competition
in which design firms vie to see who can build the most astounding
structure made entirely of full cans of food. See this year’s
clever and sometimes structurally ingenious winners.
Architects Report Open, Accessible
Housing Designs with Growing Focus on Outdoor Areas
New AIA quarterly survey of residential design trends indicates strong
business conditions
A strong housing market has generated favorable business conditions for architecture
firms working in the residential sector. Overall, 44 percent of these firms indicated
that their overall billings increased by 5 percent or more during the first quarter
of 2005, while only 10 percent reported declines from the fourth quarter of 2004
of that magnitude. There are no signs of a slowdown, as more than half of firms
report that inquires for new work also increased during the first quarter of
the year.
HOK Launches Health Clinic
in Kenya to Commemorate 50th Anniversary
Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum Inc. will recognize its half-century anniversary
in 2005 with a half-million-dollar donation to fund the construction upgrades,
outfitting, staffing, and launch of a solar-powered diagnostic and treatment
center in rural southeastern Kenya. HOK’s $500,000 donation to Africa Infectious
Disease Village Clinics, Inc., will enable the Chicago-based public charity to
launch the most comprehensive tuberculosis diagnosis and treatment initiative
in the region, the firm reports.
Washington
State Set to Implement Green Building Legislation
Many public buildings
must meet LEED™-silver
rating
Public architecture in Washington is going green as the state government there
is set to implement legislation requiring state-funded buildings—including
offices, schools, universities, and justice facilities—be built to nationally
recognized high-performance building standards. The new rules ensure that billions
of dollars in new construction and renovation projects will be built to the U.S.
Green Building Council LEED™-silver, or in the case of public schools,
the Washington Sustainable School Design Protocol.
Spotlight:
Organizational Entrepreneur Eberhard Tackles the Science of Human Experience
AIArchitect spent
an hour with John Paul Eberhard, FAIA, to ask him to synopsize his life to date
and where it is going next. Following is his narrative of a handful of highlights
of his 78 years and where his indefatigable energy will take us next.
New Clinic Is the Cat’s
Meow
VCA Arroyo Animal Hospital in Lake Forest, Ill., by Rauhaus Architects, recently
received Veterinary Economics magazine’s
national 2005 Hospital Design of the Year Award. The 7,850-square-foot facility
accommodates an extensive range of health-care services, state-of-the-art exam
rooms, and boarding, grooming, and retail services, all in an environment created
to ensure pets and their owners have a pleasant and comfortable experience. The
hospital’s reception area (pictured) offers clients a welcoming and professional
environment. The architect designed the clinic to reflect “VCA’s
reputation of providing exceptional veterinary care for companion animals.” (Photo © Larry

Research to Provide
Proof for Evidence-Based Design
Latrobe Fellowship awarded
to Chong Partners and research team
In 2003, the San Diego chapter of the AIA founded the Academy of
Neuroscience as its legacy project to research how the human brain
perceives and responds to architecture. The College of Fellows
supported the enterprise by awarding the academy its Latrobe Fellowship,
which comes with a purse of $100,000. To build on that body of
research, the College on May 20 awarded the 2005 Latrobe Fellowship
jointly to Chong Partners Architecture, the Kaiser Foundation Health
Plan Inc., and the University of California, Berkeley. The funds will support
their endeavor to record “credible, applicable evidence” that proves
the hypothesis that “the right design would increase revenue and reduce
costs due to shorter length of stay, improved patient outcomes, staff retention,
and other variables” in health-care facilities.

Community Drives Hotel Design
Cambridge Seven extends the Marriott Courtyard model and embraces
urban streetscape
The new Courtyard Marriott in Brookline, Mass., is anything but typical of the
modestly-priced hotel chain. In this project, you’ll find no garden-style
guest rooms or gazebos on the lawn. You will find thoughtful design that
enhances the streetscape and respects its neighbors, reports Gary Johnson,
AIA, of Cambridge Seven Associates.

Holding on to Your Best Asset: Your
People
“Contrary to what most people think, employees do not usually stay or leave
for reasons pertaining to salary,” according to The
Architect’s Handbook
of Professional Practice, Update 2004. “Although salary can definitely
be a factor, most people are looking for career development opportunities, work-life
balance, individualized work options and benefits, and feedback on their work
that makes them feel valuable to the organization. Despite the fact that the
latter factor requires no out-of-pocket expenses, companies often forget to ensure
their employees receive this support in a meaningful way.”
I.M. Pei to Speak at
Monticello’s July 4 Celebration
Gold Medal recipient I.M. Pei, FAIA, will serve as the featured speaker at the
Monticello’s 43rd annual Independence Day Celebration and Naturalization
Ceremony on July 4. Pei, a native of China who became a naturalized U.S. citizen
in 1954, also holds the Thomas Jefferson Foundation Medal in Architecture (1976),
French Architecture Academy’s Grand Gold Medal (1981), the Pritzker Architecture
Prize (1983), U.S. Medal of Liberty (1983), French Legion of Honor (1988), and
U.S. Medal of Freedom (1993). Since 1963, nearly 3,000 individuals have been
sworn in as American citizens at the Monticello ceremony. Independence Day speakers
at Monticello have included President Gerald Ford (1976), astronomer Carl Sagan
(1992), Gen. Colin L. Powell (1997), and Secretary of State Madeleine Albright
(2000). The July 4 event at Monticello, which will begin at 10 a.m., is free
and open to the public. For more information, visit
the Monticello Web site. (Photo by Monticello, the Thomas Jefferson

It’s Almost Here:
2005 UIA World Congress in Istanbul to Focus on “Cities:
The Grand Bazaar of Architecture”
The XXII World Congress of International Union of Architects (UIA) will take
place July 3–10 in Istanbul. Held every three years since 1948, UIA world
congresses offer platforms where the global agendas of architecture can be
discussed. The 2005 congress, hosted by the Chamber of Architects of Turkey,
will convene under the theme “CITIES: Grand Bazaar of Architecture.” Keynote
speakers include an architecture “Who’s Who” in international
practice today. Visit UIA online for program and registration information.
