Libeskind’s New Jewish Museum Breaks Ground in San Francisco
Amid the fanfare surrounding the opening of Daniel Libeskind’s Denver Art Museum on October 7, San Francisco has proudly begun construction on its own Libeskind building, the first on the West coast. The Contemporary Jewish Museum broke ground in mid-July, and, with three floors and 63,000 square feet, the new building will allow the 20-year-old museum to expand its exhibits and educational programs.

BSA Launches Uncommonly Good “Common Boston”
The coming of fall has brought a harvest of public architecture activities to Beantown, including last month’s forum entitled “Art in Context / Context in Art: The Intersection of Art and the Built Environment,” and guided walking tours of the South End’s artist community. The programs are the first fruits of a $7,500 Blueprint for America grant award by the AIA to the Boston Society of Architects (BSA) to support Common Boston, a grassroots organization working “to engage all who live and work in the Boston area to learn about and shape a sustainable, equitable, and beautiful built environment.”

International Competition: Design a Sustainable World
The Royal Institute of British Architects-USA announces “Building a Sustainable World: Life in the Balance” international competition to design a “maximally sustainable community addressing our global warming crisis,” sponsored by Autodesk and Gibbs Smith Publishers. All teams must have an accredited architect from the locale of their submitted entry. Registration is open until December 31; entries are due February 1, 2007.

Prepare for All Possibilities, Including Flu Pandemic
Flu season is upon us, and people are taking the usual precautions, such as scheduling this year’s shots (for employees and—more importantly, according to Kiplinger Newsletter, employees’ children). Taking note of the season, the CNA/Schinnerer Guidelines for Improving Practice further advises firm principals to consider the business implications if something much more dire should strike—flu pandemic.
