Eight Honored in the Palmetto State
AIA SC bestows 2005 Honor and Merit Awards
AIA South Carolina awarded four Honor Awards and four Merit Awards for “distinguished works of architecture in the state” at its recent annual conference in Columbia. The jury selected the recipients from 79 entries and included projects ranging from large corporate facilities and municipal buildings to residential projects and an interpretive center. The jury, composed of individuals representing different regions in the southeast, included Stroud Watson, Chattanooga; E. Eean McNaughton Jr., FAIA, New Orleans; and Merrill Elam, AIA, Atlanta.

Crown Hall Gets 50th Birthday Present
Mies’ masterwork, S.R. Crown Hall on the Illinois Institute of Technology campus, is undergoing a multiphase restoration, the latest component of which will stabilize the structure and the envelope; address electrical, accessibility, and infrastructure issues; and help improve energy efficiency. In keeping with Mies’ original intent, the university reports, they will once again install single-pane translucent glass and repaint the steel structure as a charcoal color, a.k.a. “Mies Black.” Mies’ grandson and Chicago architect Dirk Lohan, FAIA, will smash one of Crown Hall’s 1970s-era windows May 17—an honor he won for his firm Lohan Anderson through an eBay fundraiser for the Mies van der Rohe Society—to signal the start of this most-recent phase of renovations and to celebrate the landmark’s 50th birthday.

Naugatuck Plans Energy-Independent Redevelopment
Fox & Fowle to serve as master planner
Naugatuck, Conn., has unveiled plans to redevelop 60 acres in the heart of its historic downtown. As master planners for Renaissance Place, New York City’s Fox & Fowle Architects will oversee the region’s first energy-independent redevelopment project. Renaissance Place will transform an underused downtown corridor into a vibrant live/work/play environment with residences, retail, restaurants, entertainment, and businesses. According to Mark Strauss, the firm’s director of planning, “Although development will not happen overnight, Naugatuck has the potential to become a thriving regional center with high-quality multifamily residences, retail, office, and public green space—all while being at the forefront of sustainable design by achieving energy independence.”

Eight “Don’ts” for Expert Networking
Business networking can be tough; it’s easy to make mistakes. The good news is, once you can analyze what’s lacking from your current strategies, you can build a great new plan.

Learn All About the AIA Design-Build Documents
AIA presents a Webcast conference that you can join from your office on June 2
The AIA design-build documents apply an entirely new approach to design-build contracting that is more flexible and more owner-friendly than in the past. In addition, two new documents have been added to the family: an agreement between the owner and a design-build consultant and a form for acknowledging substantial completion of the design-build project. Take part in this live Web conference, which presents the important features of each new document to help design-builders, owners’ consultants, and design-builders’ architects understand how to use them. Join presenters Suzanne H. Harness, AIA, Esq., and Timothy R. Twomey, AIA, Esq., for the conference, 1–2 p.m. EDT on June 2. Participants earn 1.0 LU, and the registration fee is $45 per connection. For more information, visit the AIA Web site.
