AIA GRASSROOTS LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
Advocacy: We Are the Message
AIA members devoted the first day of the 2004 Grassroots conference to federal government advocacy. AIA leaders (including those from AIA New York State, shown here) headed to Capitol Hill for an afternoon of visits with their senators and representatives. Among the highlights of the day, the AIA national leadership joined the South Dakota delegation as they visited with Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle in his private offices.

AIA Strategic Plan Highlights Five Areas of Concentration for 2004–’05
Diversity, advocacy, research, livable communities, and emerging professionals top the list (members only)
On Saturday, March 6, “Community Day” of the Grassroots Leadership Conference, AIA President Eugene C. Hopkins, FAIA, presented the development of the 2004–’05 strategic plan, which, he said, began with last year’s Issues Forum. The planning group sought continuity with the previous year’s efforts, and the plan “clearly had to be member-driven and focused,” Hopkins said. AIA Executive Vice President/CEO Norman L. Koonce, FAIA, delivered an interim treasurer’s report and a State of the Institute address.

Honoring the Year’s Outstanding Achievements
Grassroots Leadership Conference honors achievements in government affairs, communications, and leadership
One of the most important and enjoyable aspects of the AIA’s Grassroots Leadership Conference is the annual acknowledgement of outstanding individuals and their jobs well done. Design Solutions for Class-Size Restrictions
In 2002, Florida voters passed an amendment to the state constitution that limits the number of public-school students assigned to each teacher. Many school districts indicated that they could comply with the new law only by increasing their use of portable facilities and prototype designs. Recognizing the potential harm these temporary solutions could have on school design and the learning environment, an AIA Florida task force developed affordable alternatives.
