AIA
Board Votes to Streamline Process for Gold Medal,
Firm Award Recipients
The AIA Board of Directors voted at its December meeting to change
the Rules of the Board to streamline the process of selecting recipients
of two of the Institute’s top awards, the AIA Gold Medal and
the AIA Architecture Firm Award. The Gold Medal honors an individual
in recognition of a significant body of work of lasting influence
on the theory and practice of architecture, and the Architecture
Firm Award is the highest honor that the AIA can bestow on an architecture
firm for consistently producing distinguished architecture. Linked
is a brief outline of changes to the nominations process.
2004
Promises Crowded Federal Agenda on the Hill
A partisan Congress facing election-year pressures reconvened last
week to a packed agenda. Lawmakers are poised for action on architecture-related
issues that include transportation funding, energy, corporate taxes,
and public-private competition.
AIA
Indianapolis Presents Its
Top Ten for 2003
AIA Indianapolis is pleased to present the winners of its annual
Excellence in Architecture Awards program. This year’s recipients,
all members of AIA Indianapolis, garnered a total of 10 awards:
three honor awards for new buildings, one merit award for small/projects/interior
architecture, and two citations each for new buildings, renovated
buildings, and small projects/interior architecture. CSO Inc. of
Indianapolis proved the top recipient this year: The firm captured
all three honor awards and a citation for renovated buildings.
Procurement Tops Components’ List
of Issues
Procurement issues will take center stage in upcoming legislative
sessions, according to a survey of AIA state and local components
conducted by the AIA Government Affairs department. Other issues
for which components anticipate legislative activity include efforts
to expand professional-service taxes to architects, statewide building
code adoption, tort reform, and interior design practice acts.

Holabird & Root Invigorate
Grand Rapids Performing Arts Center Venue

Grand Rapids, Mich., offered a charming but cramped and rundown
park pavilion. Now, patrons and performers alike can take advantage
of their beautiful new facility by Holabird & Root, Chicago,
in association with Fishbeck, Thompson, Carr & Huber, Grand
Rapids. Aquinas College, Catholic Secondary Schools and Circle Theatre
collaborated on the project.

China as the world’s next emerging economic powerhouse. Young
talent: Jobs are more plentiful, but it’s still an
employer’s market.
AIArchitect offers AIA members exclusive access to three
stories a week to help them manage their practices and plan for
the coming year. Nonmembers
may subscribe to The Kiplinger Letter.
