AIA Small Project Practitioners Journal

Letter from the Chair

By Linda Reeder, AIA - Welcome to the annual Small Project Awards issue of the SPP Journal.

Once again, small project practitioners have demonstrated that design excellence is not limited by size or budget. The jury perused more than 200 projects submitted in four categories to select the ten exceptional projects featured here. Ranging in size from a cemetery marker to a transit center, these projects demonstrate that small projects are diverse, creative, and vital to society.

Our thanks go to the awards jury who spent considerable time, thought, and care reviewing the submitted projects. The jury was composed of four architects who are small project practitioners (2012 SPP Chair and jury chair Leonard Kady, AIA; Julie Beckman; Christopher Herr, AIA, LEED AP; and Laura Kraft, AIA) and Fine Homebuilding magazine editor Rob Yagid. (Fine Homebuilding's forthcoming HOUSES issue will feature several of the residential award winners.)

The Small Project Awards program was established in 2005 to raise public awareness of the value and design excellence that architects bring to all project types, regardless of size. We have worked to keep entry fees low to make submitting projects accessible to small firm practitioners. More than 80 percent of architecture firms have fewer than 10 employees, and many of these firms execute small projects.

After reviewing the projects in this SPP Journal (edited by Marika Snider, AIA), we hope you are inspired to enter the next Small Project Awards program. The 2014 categories and submission requirements will be posted here in September. As always, all types of projects—including installations, renovations, interiors, and new construction—are eligible.

If you are attending the AIA Convention in June, please join us Thursday morning at session TH105 to celebrate these award-winning projects.

Celebrating SPP Award Recipients at AIA Convention

TH105: AIA Small Project Awards: Small Projects, Big Ideas

Earn 1.0 AIA HSW LU | Thursday, June 20, 2013 | 7:00 AM - 8:00 AM

This annual event draws attention to the frequently overlooked category of small and inexpensive projects. In spite of diminutive sizes and budgets, these recognized projects are elegantly designed, sustainable, and contextual. In this session, the meaning and value of "small" projects are celebrated for their exemplary standard in architectural design. Attendees will learn how some architects put imaginative, outside-the-box thinking to work for outstanding results. A panel comprising members of the jury and the AIA Small Project Practitioners (SPP) Knowledge Community will lead a discussion with awardees and the audience to follow through on their processes, trials, failures, and successes.
