WE302: Tools and Trends in Web Platforms and Social Media for Residential Architects and Small Project Practitioners
1:00 PM - 5:00 PM | 3.75 AIA LUs | Fee: $175
Let's face it: who has the time to create a website, let alone maintain and constantly update it? Who has time to tweet, blog, update a status, and more? Often these activities are viewed as daunting and burdensome. Of course we want to tell our story, but really, does it have to take so much time?
The good news is, it really doesn't. Being effective online isn't a factor of how much time you spend posting, updating, blogging, and so forth. It's about using the available tools and resources to be effective and efficient.
This workshop will provide insights into how to have such a web presence and how to tell your inspiring story. The result is that, by the end of the workshop, participants will be empowered to use simple, cost-effective (mostly no-cost) tools to tell their story and to have a better understanding of how this story fits with their business plan.
CRAN Seminars at AIA National Convention
TH204: Best Practices in Residential Lighting Design and Lighting Controls with Emphasis on LED and Solid-State Lighting
Thursday, June 20, 2013 | 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM | 1.50 AIA HSW LUs
This presentation will define current best practices in lighting design to integrate innovative lighting products into residential projects. Focusing on the latest in LED (light-emitting diode) technologies, solid-state lighting (SSL), and integrated lighting controls, the discussion will cover how these "green" lighting technologies are providing architects with extraordinary residential lighting design opportunities. However, there will also be a discussion of the potential pitfalls inherent in using these new technologies as well as an analysis of how they are affecting lighting controls and how the integration of lighting and lighting controls will be the future of architectural lighting design.
TH403: Learning from Passive House Design: The Real-World Metrics
Thursday, June 20, 2013 | 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM | 1.00 AIA HSW LUs | Simulcast
Attendees will be introduced to the passive house standard, today's highest standard for energy efficiency in architecture and construction, and how it can be applied to all building typologies whether or not the client and/or architect aspires to Passive House Certification. The seminar will present four case studies—a single-family detached home as well as infill housing and commercial and institutional projects—to demonstrate how the performance of any building can be cost-effectively enhanced by addressing the five fundamental passive house considerations: air-tightness, insulation, fenestration, thermal bridges, and heat recovery mechanical systems. This session will present an overview of energy conservation in residential, commercial, and institutional projects that focus on ways to design and build better.
FR205: Did You Get the Owner's Manual for Your Practice?
Friday, June 21, 2013 | 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM | 1.50 AIA LUs
This program is intended to provide a basic grounding in legal principles that are essential knowledge for practicing architects. All too often, architects are timid about expanded practice or new relationships because of uncertainty about the legal context for doing so. This program will help participants to unlock the potential for increased creativity in practice by improving their knowledge of applicable legal principles. Participants will leave the program with increased confidence that they can embrace new models of practice, new and expanded relationships, and unbounded creativity without undue fear of legal complications or liability.
SA101: Post-Occupancy Evaluation of a LEED Platinum Home
Saturday, June 22, 2013 | 7:00 AM - 8:00 AM | 1.00 AIA LUs + GBCI
A project will be presented as a case study on how post-occupancy evaluation can verify LEED and 2030 Challenge energy goals; how providing clients with easily accessible energy consumption data can change habits and significantly reduce energy use; and how the architect can take the lessons learned from this process and apply them to other projects in their office. The presentation will include an overview of the project design and the passive and active sustainable strategies used throughout the project. We will then discuss the specifics of the monitoring systems used in the house and the data that have been collected since late 2010. Finally, we will compare the actual performance with the performance model that was constructed during the design phase of the project.

Free Webinar: ReFAB PreFAB: The Practice and Science of Prefabrication at the Cutting Edge
March 11, 2013 | 12-1pm ET | 9-10am PT | Earn 1.0 AIA HSW LU | Learn more »
Although prefabrication is not new to the practice of architecture, its full potential, particularly in residential design and construction, has yet to be realized. The time for architects to take the lead in realizing this potential is now. New concepts and technologies in prefabrication are creating exciting new architecture and opening the opportunity for architects to influence a larger segment of the construction industry. Not only will prefabrication expand architects' influence, it will also help revitalize residential neighborhoods, influence sustainable design, and provide lower-cost home-ownership alternatives.
