There are many interesting and diverse international healthcare projects. Although many have been designed by US firms, there are also foreign architects designing healthcare facilities in response to unique climates, cultures, values, reimbursement structures, codes and outcomes. This forum will share examples and host an interactive session to evaluate these projects, define their innovative features and compare them to US based projects.

Trip Grant, AIA, NCARB, LEED® AP, Vice President, Los Angeles, HOKs

Explore how the new Cedars-Sinai Advanced Health Sciences Pavilion (AHSP) in Los Angeles looks beyond current research methodologies to a future model. Merging three critical drivers—research, education, and patient care—the AHSP houses wet lab research, advanced simulation labs, ambulatory surgery, neurointervention labs, and cardiac catheterization labs in a new 11-story, 850,000 square feet LEED Gold facility. This facility illuminates how to create a physical environment that contains diverse, patient-centric functions and identifies synergies created by co-locating research, education, and patient care in one of the most advanced teaching and simulation environments.

This session will provide EDAC credits.

E23 - Strategic Planning + Programming/Planning Forum
10:40am-11:40am
Room: Sun Ballroom C

Speakers: Steve Langston, AIA, ACHA, EDAC, LEED AP, Design Director, RLF Architects Engineers Interiors; Gary W. Collins, AIA, NCARB, Vice President, Health Care Institute, an IFMA Alliance
Partner

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) is a challenge to redirect and align our efforts to streamline operations, improve quality, and increase patient outcomes and satisfaction under new regulatory requirements and payment structures. Acute care providers understand they will need to play an active role in pre and post-acute/outpatient care plans. This session, through a panel discussion, will present and engage the audience with strategies that begin to envision these transitions.

Room: St. George 112

Speakers: Carlos Amato, AIA, ACHA, Principal/Western Region Healthcare Market Leader, Cannon Design

This workshop will provide healthcare architects with useful information to submit their credentials and prepare for the ACHA Exam. The seminar covers application materials, portfolios, exam topics, sample questions, scoring criteria and exam schedules. Limit 50 participants.

E33 - Research Forum: RESEARCH at Your Desktop - The New Knowledge Repository
1:40pm-2:40pm

Carolyn Quist, MA, EDAC, Director of Operations, The Center for Health Design; Walter Vernon, CEO, Mazzetti

During the past 10 years we’ve seen the emergence of evidence-based design (EBD) as the hottest topic in healthcare design conferences and publications. However, healthcare designers express difficulties in accessing the research knowledge to apply to their projects. In addition, most project fees and schedules simply don’t provide enough time to engage in the rigorous literature search to locate relevant knowledge. There is a new tool that will change that.

The Center for Health Design, with financial sponsorship and collaboration of the AIA Academy of Architecture for Health (AAH), AAH Foundation, and ASHE has created the Research Repository. This new searchable research database contains a growing collection of research summaries, accessed through the CHD or AAH websites for free. This session will provide EDAC credits.

R27 - Architecture + Health Education Forum: MOOC Madness
8:00am-9:00am
Room: Orange Blossom

Speakers: David Allison FAIA, FACHA, Alumni Distinguished Professor and Director, Graduate Studies in Architecture + Health, Clemson University; Frank Zilm, DArch, FAIA, FACHA, Chester Dean Lecturer on Healthcare Design, University of Kansas

This forum is intended to allow educators involved in programs, studios or courses focused on healthcare architecture and design professionals interested in education to discuss issues of content, curriculum and pedagogy.  It is also intended to explore ways to better integrate academia, the design professions and the healthcare industry at large. The session this year will focus on an examination of MOOCs - Massive Open Online Courses – as a Utilization of the internet to provide educational opportunities has evolved for posting of information, webinars, and blogs to exploration of complete course and degrees via the internet.  A consortium of architecture schools providing healthcare architecture programs are exploring options for providing relevant courses to students and professional seeking additional knowledge and skills. The MOOC (massive open online course) movement is in its infancy.  This approach may provide interesting teaching models.  This session will explore educational options provided by the internet.  We will seek input from participants regarding possible content, methods, and speakers.

R30 - Neuroscience and Architecture Forum
9:20am-10:20am
Room: Orange Blossom

Speakers: Eve Edelstein, MArch, PhD, EDAC, Associate, AIA, F-AAA, Associate Professor, College of Architecture, Planning & Landscape Architecture

The Neuroscience and Architecture Forum is a platform for advancing research-enhanced design. The forum will review practical means to apply scientific methods and new technologies within the architectural process. A pragmatic neuro-architectural process is described that applies evidence-gathering on time, and within budget to enhance the impact of design on human outcomes. Examples include architectural projects where research is integrated at each stage of the architectural process from concept through construction, with a focus on pre-design research as well as post-occupancy evaluations. New and emerging technologies including immersive CAVE mockups, sound simulations and synchronous biosensors of brain and body activity are included. The Neuroscience and Architecture Forum encourages participant discussions.
