May 2016 Technique

Letter from the Chair

I have the honor of being the 2016 and 2017 Chair of TDBP. I wanted to send out a greeting and update our members on the current state of TDBP focus and activities.

At this moment in our profession, we are confronting the questions of “What is the relevance of our service for our clients?” and “What is the impact of our work for society?” TDBP members have a large part to play in this conversation.

Pamela Sams

Architects should be leaders in the application of technical design for building performance. We can leverage our expertise and our position as Leaders of the Design Team to be more focused on delivering projects that meet the goals that we set with our clients.  If we can meet this challenge we will improve the quality of the service that we provide and create pathways to broader services and deeper partnerships. To meet this goal, we will have to convince many practicing architects and emerging professionals that sound knowledge of basic building science, technical design and data driven building performance is fundamental to the value of the architectural service.

Addressing Foundation Wall Vapor Drive

By Drake A. Wauters, AIA

vapor drive year round

When reading about fearless world famous architects and the building scientists that support their projects with their active skins, advanced materials, and many innovations one would think that change comes swiftly to the design of buildings. However for most buildings this is certainly not true and to that point I would like to say a few important things about the humble basement.

In the News

In remembrance of Michael Chelednik, AIA

It is with deep sorrow that we mark the passing of Michael Chelednik, AIA on April 4. Michael was a loving family man, a consummate professional, and an architect who was truly dedicated to the advancement of our profession through his many contributions to the AIA and to our knowledge community, Technical Design for Building Performance (TDBP).

From the initial roundtable that led to the creation of TDBP in 2010 and in every year that followed, Michael's commitment to the delivery of higher performing buildings through commissioning and our on-going efforts to strengthen the education and training requirements for architects in building science was both selfless and profound.
