Technique Newsletter

March 2015 Technique

Technique is the semi-annual newsletter from the AIA’s Technical Design for Building Performance (TDBP) Knowledge Community. The goal of TDBP is to promote architects as leaders in the application of technical design, building science, detailing, life safety and systems integration to deliver buildings that meet heightened energy performance and owner’s expectations while maintaining the highest of aesthetic aspirations. TDBP will showcase the application of high-performance design criteria, codes, and standards; the commissioning roles required to deliver high performing buildings; and best practices for programming, designing and managing building performance.

Effective Air Barriers

By Drake Wauters, AIA

Our building enclosures perform a great many services for us and most of those services are fairly tangible. One of those services, air leakage control, is not that tangible and is often overlooked in both the most obvious places and the least obvious ones. Though overlooked, the air leakage rates are essential information that mechanical engineers must have and rely on to correctly assess thermal loads, humidity controls, and the correct level of air changes for ventilation.

Why Architects Should Lead the Commissioning Process

By Pamela Sams, AIA

When architects lead the commissioning process, there is a higher chance of it being more successful and impact the design process to produce a better crafted building. It is the architect’s responsibility to observe, listen and research the owner’s needs; to understand the physical characteristics of the site, the code requirements, and then develop design solutions that go far beyond solving the problem set.

Codes, Standards and Rating System

By Maureen Guttman, AIA

In the United States, national model energy codes were created in response to the energy and economic crises of the 1970s. In 1978, Congress passed the National Energy Conservation Policy Act, which required states that received federal financial assistance to initiate energy efficiency standards for new buildings.

WE102 Rain Water Penetration Principals: Clarifying Terminology
Wednesday, May 13, 2015 \ 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM \ Earn 3.75 LUs HSW GBCI \ Georgia World Congress Center Room B206 \ Fee: $190

Explore a glossary of terms associated with envelope rainwater penetration in this workshop. Through clear, consistent terminology—including barrier, control, layer, surface, system, enclosure, drained cavity wall assembly, back-ventilated drain cavity wall assembly, rain screen, and more—you'll gain a deeper understanding of these concepts and a better ability to communicate with clients and contractors.

Plus, sharpen your knowledge of how to build various structures and solutions to redirect and control moisture, such as:

  • Pressure-equalized rain screen walls
  • Back-ventilated drained cavity walls
  • Drainage plane walls
  • Barrier walls

WE302 Architects Leading the Commissioning Process
Wednesday, May 13, 2015 \ 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM \ Earn 3.75 LUs HSW GBCI \ Georgia World Congress Center Room B406 \ Fee: $190

This half-day workshop will address why architects should become:

  • Commissioning Authorities following ASHRAE Guideline 0, 2
  • Building Enclosure Commissioning Authorities following NIBS Guideline 3 and ASTM E-2813
  • Leaders and developers of Whole Building Commissioning

Access the tools and techniques to grow your business, achieve more efficient designs, and build a comprehensive, well-rounded practice through building commissioning services. Plus, explore the status of developing certifications for Commissioning Authorities, Building Enclosure Commissioning Providers, and Building Enclosure Commissioning Specialists.
