New economic realities favor the versatility and agility of small practice. At the same time, industry trends towards BIM and IPD favor the resource-rich larger firms. In addition to fluency with design and technology, the successful small practitioner requires a broad spectrum of management skills. During the coming decade, those architects that can respond to both needs will be well positioned to remain competitive and to retain top staff. This seminar will help the small firm identify and build those business skills necessary for a successful design practice.

Current AIA documents may need modifications to respond adequately to such concerns. The program would be flexible enough to address the various forms of service delivery that small practices use. The program also will identify strategies to improve both architects' and clients' understanding of contracts to improve performance and compliance and reasonably protect both parties.

Not all architects can deliver successful small projects. Through an introspective look into the individual processes of four successful firms, each with a focus on small project design, this workshop will provide the knowledge that is essential to any individual wishing to take on small project design.

Panelists will provide insight into both therapeutic requirements and funding opportunities, as well as design inspiration. Group discussion will challenge the nature of home design and will expand architects' abilities to positively impact a wide range of social, political, and cultural trends.
