Healthcare Webinar Updates

The Healthcare 101/201 Webinar Committee created a new mission statement for the monthly webinar series. The statement aligns the committee's vision on the future of architectural practice with the series schedule.

Mission Statement: The Healthcare 101 and 201 Webinars are a series of monthly, web-based seminars sponsored by the AIA Academy of Architecture for Health. On the first Tuesday of each month, nationally recognized experts will conduct a 90 minute Webinar tailored to healthcare design professionals. The 101 series is aimed at architects who may be new to Healthcare Design, as well as those who are interested in specific presentations that will enhance their current or future healthcare project work. The 101 series focuses on healthcare design practice issues and project types. The 201 Webinars, also led by national experts, are focused on the client/architect relationship and the knowledge that an astute healthcare architect should be able to discuss with a client, consultant, or colleague on topics directly related to the healthcare profession at large, including but not limited to design, policy, local and global communities, and the remunerative “value impact” that healthcare architects can impart above and beyond “just drawing buildings.”

The Impact of Healthcare Reform on Hospital Design and Construction - One State's Perspective
By Dan Scheaffer, AIA

When Thornton was hired as President of the Hospital Association in 2005, South Carolina’s hospitals were eager to strengthen their political advocacy and enhance SCHA’s brand. Thornton and his team worked with hospital leaders to re-order the Association’s priorities, and then rebuilt the organization around an updated vision of what a modern hospital association should be. Central to that vision is a simple truth: hospitals are expected to deliver excellent patient care in a safe environment.

Thornton recently spoke at the 2011 South Atlantic Region Architecture for Health Spring Conference, Chautauqua 2.0 on Regional Healthcare, in Clemson, SC. Mr. Kirby summarized the history of healthcare delivery and policy in America from a nonpartisan point of view. His presentation highlighted the key points of the Affordable Healthcare Act and covered the topics of Medicare and Medicaid and the controversy surrounding them. In perhaps the most insightful part of his talk, Thornton described how the Affordable Care Act is affecting healthcare design, how SC hospital's are responding and his thoughts on the future of healthcare delivery.

The Academy found Thornton's unique perspective on many of the policy issues facing South Carolina to be so insightful that we wanted to make his knowledge available to all healthcare architects and other related professionals. We encourage you to tune in to Thornton Kirby's presentation via webinar on June 14th, 2011 at 4 p.m. EST.

Registration is now open | Tuesday, June 14, 2011 | 4:00-5:30 p.m. ET
