  AIA Cosponsors Solar Decathlon on National Mall Oct. 8–18
The U.S. Department of Energy will host the fourth Solar Decathlon October 8-18 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Twenty teams of university students from around the world compete to design, construct, and monitor energy-efficient solar powered homes, and the general public is invited to tour cutting edge green residential design; more than 100,000 have visited each of the preceding three events. The AIA has been proud to be a supporting sponsor of the Solar Decathlon from the first one in 2002. On October 9, 15, and 16 respectively, the Institute will hold panels in association with the event on Green Jobs, the COTE Top 10, and Net-Zero Energy Buildings.

VIDEO: AIA Forum Highlights Mass Transit as Foundation of Sustainable Communities
The AIA’s September public infrastructure forum focused on mass transit issues and brought together a diverse group of infrastructure and planning officials and the general public. One unified message emerged: to get control over transportation and infrastructural issues, states and municipalities need to coordinate their efforts among government agencies, the private sector, and the public. Denver Drafts New Zoning Code
The Denver City Council came to agreement September 28 on a schedule for implementing a new zoning code for the city that includes form-based provisions intended to codify a contextual range for neighborhoods extending from the downtown out to the city’s suburbs. For its part, AIA Denver has been active in reviewing the code drafts, testing the provisions through schematic case-studies, and working with the Denver Community Planning and Development Department as it finalizes a code for city council deliberation, which the council schedule has set for February 22, 2010.

Fall Conferences and Seminars Focus on Sustainability
Take advantage of this fall’s crop of sustainable building conferences, seminars, and events this. These events (national and regional in scale) will offer continuing education opportunities, networking receptions, and industry-leading keynote speakers.

  • Sustainable Suburbs Forum, Urban Land Institute, October 8 in Washington, D.C.
  • The Consulate General of Sweden in New York is hosting a green building seminar on October 14 at Victor Borge Hall in the Scandinavia House at 58 Park Avenue in Manhattan.
  • Sustainable Delaware 2009, AIA Delaware’s fourth annual sustainability conference will take place at the University of Delaware October 15–16.
  • The Greenbuild International Conference and Expo will take place in Phoenix, Ariz., Nov. 11–13.
  • The annual Ecobuild America conference will take place December 7–10 in Washington, D.C.

ARCC/EAAE Conference “Call for Papers” on Architectural Research
The Architectural Research Centers Consortium (ARCC) and the European Association for Architectural Education (EAAE) are holding a joint International Conference on Architectural Research June 23–25, 2010, in Washington D.C. The conference is to serve as a forum for the dissemination and discussion of architectural research issues, concerns, findings, approaches, philosophies, and potentials. The Consortium welcomes researchers, educators, practitioners, and scholars in architecture, landscape architecture, and planning to become involved. The final session themes of the conference will be formed to reflect the diversity of the presenters’ work and investigations. Abstracts are due October 15, 2009. As part of its position statement review process, the AIA national component is currently conducting a 60-day public comment period on five existing position statements as well as a newly proposed Interoperability Position Statement:
