University of Arkansas Projects Receive Green Globes Designations
The Green Building Initiative (GBI) last month recognized two University of Arkansas buildings for achieving official Green Globes® designations for sustainable design and construction. The Duncan Avenue Apartments and the Duncan Avenue Community Center were both recognized at an Earth Day ceremony. Ward Hubbell, president of the GBI, presented leaders from the University of Arkansas with plaques for the buildings’ environmental achievements. The apartment building and community center, opened in fall 2008, are part of the University of Arkansas housing. The design for each focuses on energy and water efficiency. The Duncan Avenue Apartments is the first apartment in the U.S. to be Green Globes certified.
AIA President Lauds Target’s Designs as Smart Business Strategy
AIA President Marvin Malecha, FAIA, issued a Presidential Citation earlier this spring to the Target Corporation and its design chief Richard Varda, FAIA, praising the company’s “leadership in demonstrating the value of design as a smart business strategy that builds brand loyalty among its team members, its guests, and the global communities it serves.” Malecha read the citation during an AIA Board meeting in Minneapolis, Target’s home base. Varda discusses here how Target is, in the words of the citation, “promoting stewardship of the environment and making design thinking not a luxury, but a way of life.”
