The User’s Guide: Find a Federal Stimulus Design and Construction Project for Your Firm The $787 billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) that was signed into law in February has just now begun releasing torrents of tax dollars into an economy plagued by frozen credit markets, consumer anxiety, and a deepening recession. In line with the AIA’s Rebuild and Renew government advocacy initiative, much of this funding is already being applied directly to the built environment as new construction projects, renovations, repairs, and sustainability upgrades, though an emphasis on “shovel ready” projects may limit some design opportunities. Even more is yet to come.
Freelon Adjaye Bond/Smith Group Selected for Smithsonian Museum
The Smithsonian announced April 14 that a design team of four firms will design the National Museum of African American History and Culture: The Freelon Group, Adjaye Associates, Davis Brody Bond, and SmithGroup. The Freelon Group will be the architect of record and Philip Freelon, FAIA, will serve as the design guarantor—making sure that the design reflects the values and priorities of the museum and the Smithsonian. David Adjaye will be the lead designer.
Gehry Selected to Design Eisenhower National Memorial
The Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial Commission and the General Services Administration selected Gehry Partners, LLP, the Los Angeles-based architecture firm headed by Frank O. Gehry, FAIA, as lead designer of the national memorial to Pres. Dwight D. Eisenhower. The Eisenhower Memorial will be the seventh national presidential memorial in the nation’s capital and the first since the Franklin Delano Roosevelt memorial opened in 1997.

AIA to Engage State-of-the-Art Personal Profile Software
AIA members will be able to update their personal profile information, manage information/subscriptions to publications, and renew membership on-line using the AIA’s new association management system (AMS), which launches April 27. Also, new members will be able to join the AIA directly through this new system. |
