Register Now for the AIA Annual Convention
The Power of Diversity: Practice in a Complex World, April 30—May 2, San Francisco

Veteran AIA convention attendee Stephanie Rowe, AIA, signed up early for this year’s annual convention despite the busy pace at her firm, Reece Angell Rowe Architects in Arizona. Like many AIA members, she was first attracted by the San Francisco location and the insider building tours often run by the architect who designed the building or an expert close to the project. (This year’s event features self-guided audio walking tours narrated by noted architectural historian Mitchell Schwarzer.)

Rowe also cites the educational and networking opportunities at the event. “I can get all my CES credits in one week–and in an interesting way. It’s great spending time with other architects when we’re out of the office and more relaxed.”

Another big draw is the large exposition floor, which features more than 850 vendors this year. “It’s one of the best trade show floors in the industry to discover new vendors and products,” says Rowe, who is particularly interested in the latest solar offerings this year.

This year’s conference is designed to help architects harness their potential in a complex world and draw strength from many perspectives, local and global. It’s also designed to help architects take care of business today and take time to think about tomorrow. In response to member requests, the AIA has developed a new seminar track, Navigating the Economy, which includes a specially-priced, $100 all-day seminar entitled Business Planning in a Weak Economy, where attendees can develop business plans and strategies and can evaluate in detail the impact of the recovery act on their business.

A turbulent economy also affects architects at a personal level, as the profession faces lay-offs and stalled projects. Courses such as Surviving the Recession: An Employee and Employer Guide and Career Management focus on the issues impacting individuals on a day-to-day basis. Special programs, such as job coaching, résumé writing, interviewing skills, and portfolio development are now on the schedule.

Watch this space for conference updates, session highlights, speaker interviews, and profiles with keynote presenters. Register Now. AIA members receive an additional 5 percent discount when they register and use promo code MEMBER. And take advantage of the new one-day pass, specially designed for locals and those attendees living within a day’s flight of San Francisco.
