Black Men Built the Capitol: Discovering African-American History in and around Washington, D.C., by Jesse J. Holland (Globe Pequot Press, 2007). As African-American History Month has come to a close for 2009, the AIA Bookstore turns to prominent Washington, D.C., journalist Jesse Holland for a lecture (offering 1 AIA CES LU) Monday, March 16, from noon to 1 p.m., followed by a book signing, at the AIA headquarters building, 1735 New York Ave., NW. Featured is Holland’s book on the role of African Americans in the creation of the capital city, from the Capitol and White House to the yet-to-be-built Martin Luther King Memorial and yet-to-be-commissioned Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. The book also looks at some of the history of slavery in the District as well as the freedmen communities in the area.
