Just How Do You Integrate Research Into Practice?
Join this year’s ACSA/AIA Teachers Seminar at Cranbrook, June 19–22

Summary: The AIA and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) invite you to join them as they explore learning about how to make the leap from research in the academy to research in the profession at the 2008 ACSA/AIA Teachers Seminar, June 19–22, at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Mich. The conference theme, “Deep Matters: The Path to Meaningful and Provocative Architectural Research,” will offer both inspiration and information for design studio instructors to help their students, faculty, colleagues, and communities learn and use these important lifelong research skills.

Co-chairs Stephen Kieran, FAIA, and James Timberlake, FAIA, professors at the University of Pennsylvania and University of Washington and partners at KieranTimberlake Associates, recipient of the 2008 AIA Architecture Firm Award, will be joined by University of Arizona professor Max Underwood, AIA, an ACSA Distinguished Professor who has received three AIA National Teaching Innovation Awards. Presentations of papers and keynote lectures will inform workshop breakout sessions to help participants develop a blueprint for deeply embedding research into our work as teachers and practitioners.

This year’s keynote speakers are:

  • Brent Segal, PhD, co-founder of Nantero Inc., a leading nanotechnology company that is using carbon nanotubes for the development of next-generation semiconductor devices. Segal has 10 patents, with some 90 additional applications for patents.
  • Thomas Daniel, PhD, chair of the University of Washington Biology Department, where his research focuses on the application of physical principles towards understanding the design of biological systems—specifically the principles that govern the movement and morphology of animals.
  • Jack Keebler, director of GM's vehicle concepts and development in the global product planning division. Before joining GM, Keebler was Motor Trend magazine's senior editor, conducting instrumented vehicle tests and multi-model comparisons around the globe, exploring pre-production and concept vehicles, and writing about design, engineering, emissions, and safety.

Highlights of the academy also will include:

  • Sessions: Presentations on Defining Architectural Research in the Academy and Practice, Discovering Emerging Methods of Research Innovation, and Exploring Case Studies of Innovative and Applied Research
  • Workshops: After each session, teams will develop research approaches and research models around which the academy can frame education
  • Tour: The Glass Pavilion at the Toledo Museum of Art, by SANAA (Thursday, 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.), and the Ford’s Rouge Factory, by William McDonough + Partners (Sunday, June 22, 9:00.a.m.–1:00 p.m.).
