George H. Miller, FAIA, Elected 2010 President
On May 23, delegates to the AIA National Convention in Boston elected George H. Miller, FAIA, to serve as the 2009 AIA first vice president/president-elect and the 2010 Institute president. Miller, a partner at Pei Cobb Freed, says: “Our world is changing at an accelerating rate. The AIA must set the pace, as leaders and stewards for our neighborhoods and the environment. A more agile AIA can provide greater value to all our members worldwide.”
Miller’s goals for the Institute include promoting sustainability and infrastructure advocacy issues, strengthening and diversifying the AIA community, and facilitating the fluid exchange of information across the profession, between academic and professional communities, and between AIA Knowledge Communities and components.
Born in Berlin and raised in northeastern Pennsylvania, Miller received his BArch from Pennsylvania State University in 1973 and has been with Pei Cobb Freed since 1975. In this time, he’s worked on many significant projects, like the Hyatt Center in Chicago, the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, the Johnson and Johnson Headquarters in New Brunswick, N.J., and Center for Government and International Studies at Harvard.
An AIA vice president in 2007–08, Miller has also served as treasurer, vice president, and president of AIA New York. He was also a regional director for AIA New York State from 2004 to 2006, and was a member of the Gold Medal and Firm Advisory Committee in 2004-05. He’s been involved with the AIA Large Firm Round Table since 1989 and has been a Fellow of the Institute since 1999.
In addition to these Institute leadership roles, Miller is a member of the Architecture League of New York and a member of New York Building Congress.
