  Stephen K. Loos Elected Secretary

On May 17, delegates to the AIA National Convention in Boston elected Stephen K. Loos, AIA, to a two-year term as secretary of the AIA beginning in December of 2008. Loos, a senior design architect for the Mulhern Group Ltd., says the office of secretary “is uniquely position and empowered to advance significantly both the Institute’s mission and its methods.”

“As to methods,” Loos says, “I see the secretary’s role as utilizing our rules, procedures, and ethical standards to establish a culture of equitable, honorable, and respectful treatment of our fellow professionals, our components, and the public. “As to mission, the secretary sets the tone for the Institute’s deliberations by helping to establish its priorities and its agenda.” Loos also says he’s committed to advancing sustainability, diversity, and integrated project delivery strategic initiatives.

Loos earned a BArch from the University of Colorado at Boulder, did post-graduate work in urban planning at the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom, and eventually came back to the U.S. to get a Master’s Degree in Urban and Environmental Studies from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. His Denver-based firm, the Mulhern Group, specializes in mixed-use retail and commercial projects.

Loos was president of AIA Colorado North in 1998 and president of AIA Colorado in 2000. He served as secretary to the Western Mountain Regional Council from 2004 till 2005, and is a regional director of the Western Mountain area. Additionally, Loos has been a member of the Boulder Chamber of Commerce, the Denver Downtown Development Council, and the Colorado Renewable Energy Society.
