AIA, AIA California Council Launch Integrated Project Delivery: A Guide
The AIA and AIA California Council introduced the Integrated Project Delivery: A Guide on November 5. The IPD Guide is intended to help define integrated project delivery as the design and construction industry continues to move toward more effective and collaborative team approaches. Technological evolution—coupled with owners’ ongoing demand for more effective processes that result in better, faster, less costly, and less adversarial construction projects—are driving significant and rapid change in the construction industry.

Member Suspended for Violating AIA Code of Ethics
The National Ethics Council (“Council”) has suspended the membership of Roman T. Holowka, AIA, for two years for violating Rule 1.101 and Rule 3.103 of the Institute’s Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct (“Code of Ethics”).

Rule 1.101 states: In practicing architecture, Members shall demonstrate a consistent pattern of reasonable care and competence, and shall apply the technical knowledge and skill which is ordinarily applied by architects of good standing practicing in the same locality.

Rule 3.103 states: Members shall not materially alter the scope or objectives of a project without the client’s consent.

Pssst … Ready to Walk to a Green Future?
New campaign about to launch
The AIA is taking a big step towards a more sustainable future in 2008, with plans for a new integrated marketing campaign to be launched in January. AIA members will get a sneak peek at the campaign next week in AIArchitect and on the AIA Web site. Although the marketing people are being tight lipped about details, we do know that the campaign centers on the AIA’s decision to stand firm on the issue of sustainable design—and AIA architects being part of the solution to the issues surrounding global warming. “We believe the time for talking about how we as AIA Architects can help is past,” says Miguel Rodriguez, AIA, vice president and chair of the Board Advocacy Committee. “We know that the next decade is going to see tremendous growth in new and renovated structures. The technology, materials, and methods are there to provide sustainable solutions in all avenues to our clients. Now it’s time to walk the walk.” The new campaign will be launched in both print and online. Stay tuned.

Houston’s Co-Cathedral Construction Nears Completion
Ziegler Cooper Architects reports that the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Houston is on schedule for completion soon after the New Year. Commissioned by Archbishop Joseph Fiorenza of the archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, the firm was charged with designing “a new cathedral for the ages, one of profound spiritual expression and enduring artistic quality.” Located in the southern central business district of downtown Houston, The Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart has played a critical role in the redevelopment of the Main Street corridor by commanding an entire city block and creating a new landmark: Cathedral Square. The exterior of the cathedral was inspired by the Italian Romanesque style. Built with more than 73,000 square feet of Indiana limestone, the cathedral is capped with a copper dome supporting a 17-foot-high, gold-leaf cross. Soaring 125 feet above the altar, the dome is encircled by 12 stained glass windows bearing the images of the 12 apostles. An eight-foot oculus depicts the Holy Spirit stained glass.
