Delegates to the AIA National Convention in San Antonio May 4 elected Marvin J. Malecha, FAIA, to serve as the 2008 AIA first vice president/president-elect and 2009 Institute president. Malecha, dean of the College of Design at North Carolina State University, Raleigh, says: “Our profession is bursting with new knowledge, with skills tested by application and measured by how we improve the lives of those who experience our work.”

Malecha’s vision for the Institute includes reaching out to partners, listening to members and broadening participation, empowering components, expanding opportunities for women and minorities, and addressing the needs of emerging professionals. “Together we can lead by the authority of our ideas.”

Malecha is the senior director representing the South Atlantic region on the AIA Board of Directors. In 2003 he received the AIA/ACSA Topaz Medallion for Excellence in Architecture. He is active in developing the case-study method as part of the design curriculum and as a means to guide the structure of the Intern Development Program record-keeping in practice. He consults on religious architecture and is the lead designer for the new chancellor’s residence at NCSU.

Prior to his appointment at NCSU, Malecha was on the faculty of the Boston Architectural Center and the faculty at California State Polytechnic University at Pomona, first as an assistant professor and later as dean. Malecha attended St. Thomas College (St. Paul) and earned his BArch degree from the University of Minnesota and his MArch from Harvard University.

On the national AIA level, Malecha served as cochair of the AIA Case Study Working Group and was a member of the Architects in Education Steering Committee. He has been a member of his state component board and served as a visiting team chair for more than 20 National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) accreditation teams. He is a prolific writer and speaker.
