King Memorial Breaks Ground in D.C.
Luminaries from the Civil Rights Movement joined President Bush
and former President Clinton on the western edge of the Capital Mall
Tidal Basin November 13 to honor the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King
Jr. at the ground breaking of the King Memorial. The four-acre memorial
site, situated between the Lincoln and Roosevelt memorials and facing
the Jefferson Memorial across the basin, is the first Mall site devoted
to someone other than a U.S. president or war hero and the only one
honoring an African American. The monument design is a joint venture
between the 2000
competition winner ROMA Design Group, San Francisco,
and Devrouax & Purnell, Washington, D.C. Devrouax & Purnell/ROMA Design Group Joint Venture became the architect of record in February 2004. The memorial is scheduled for completion in 2008. Site drawing courtesy of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation.
