A Message
From the CEO: Where We Stand
Executive Vice President/CEO Norman L. Koonce, FAIA, presents first-quarter
financial results and highlights new Institute services.
Rehab
Forms Key Segment of Nonresidential Construction Sector
Rehabilitation share climbs when new construction
is weak
Last year, construction contracts for additions to and alterations
of nonresidential facilities totaled $57.7 billion, according to
McGraw-Hill Construction. With total construction and rehabilitation
contracts reaching $152.3 billion in 2002, additions and alterations
accounted for almost 38 percent of the market.

Candidates for AIA office respond to questions
The eight candidates running for AIA office in 2004 have responded
by e-mail to two sets of questions. The National Associates Committee
asked about public safety, specialization/certification, and responsibilities
to interns.
The Professional Interest Areas (PIA Council) wanted candidates’
opinions on: the future of PIAs, organizational structure, resource
allocation, collaboration in planning for the convention, and a
PIA representative to the Executive Committee of the Board. Find
out what the candidates have to say.
Poll: What Do You Think About AIA Membership?
Please share your views on these seven
questions
Grassroots Leadership Conference participants expressed their opinions
on six topics—architecture education, financial realignment,
the profession, communications, knowledge, and membership—during
the annual Issues Forum, March 10, in Washington, D.C. Now it’s
your turn. Please respond to these seven questions about the sixth
topic: membership. AIArchitect
ran polls of the other topics, and will tally the results and share
them in our convention issue, May 9. See also comments from past
polls.
Innovative
Academic Programs Receive 2003 Education Honor Awards
A first-year design studio project that encourages communication
between architect and client, a program that raises students’
consciousness about observing great architecture, and international
workshops that expose students to other cultures received this year’s
AIA Education Honor Awards from the AIA Educator/Practitioner Net
(EPN).
FROM THE PRESIDENT’S OFFICE
Shoes That Need to Be Filled
The recent deaths of J. Carter Brown and Senator Daniel Patrick
Moynihan have left huge shoes that need to be filled. Both made
great contributions to the quality of American life, especially
in the arenas of urban design and architecture.

Green Building for N.H. Forest Protection
Earns LEED Gold Certification
The U.S. Green Building Council awarded the three-story, 11,400-square-foot
French Wing at the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests’
Conservation Center in Concord, N.H., a Gold certification in the
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED™) program.
Designed by Banwell Architects, the French Wing is the first project
in New England and one of only a dozen buildings nationally to receive
a Gold certification.

Stock Market: 10 percent S&P
gain still likely for 2003 (with some caveats), spurring corporate
capital investment toward year’s end. World
Business: SARS spread in China could slow Asian economy;
Japanese wary. Brazil and Argentina turning around, Venezuela still
stalled. Iraq: Smaller firms have
a shot at the $100 billion U.S. will spend in reconstruction the
next five years. To get subcontract work with the construction-giant
primes, consider a corporate matchmaker.

BEST
PRACTICES (members only)
Partnering, Teaming Improve Design/Build
Success
Architects, contractors, and subcontractors in successful design/build
projects understand that they work toward a common purpose; they
work for each other as much as
with. Two elements of establishing
an effective, interdependent relationship are creating a partnering
charter and developing a teaming agreement. Here are some ideas
on cementing the design/build partnership gleaned from the newly
published The Architect’s Guide
to Design-Build Services.
Ground Zero Memorial Competition
Launched
Maya Lin, Enrique Norten to serve as
jurors
Lower Manhattan redevelopment planners launched the design
competition for the World Trade Center Memorial April 28. The international
program is advertised in a media campaign in 22 languages to solicit
design ideas from anyone over the age of 18, as well as from children
and teens who work with an adult. Registration is due May 29.
Meet
Your Friends at the “Marketplace”
Eat, drink, and see the latest in education
programs
In between the pre-convention workshops and the official opening
session is the CES Marketplace, the “smartest party at the
AIA convention,” Wednesday, May 7, 5–8 p.m. See the
best educational programs offered by CES providers, enjoy some food
and drink with your friends, and maybe even win a prize. The event,
sponsored by McGraw-Hill Construction, Ron Blank and Associates,
CertainTeed, TRACO Doors and Windows, and U.S. Gypsum and hosted
by Custom Building Products and MCSi, is free to all with a ticket
or a convention badge. So, follow the mariachi band to Ballroom
