“We’re here to talk about the <em>why</em> of design, and it’s because life depends upon it at this time,” said Friday’s plenary speaker Ed Mazria, AIA, founder and CEO of Architecture 2030.

KCRW’s <em>DnA: Design and Architecture</em> host and panel moderator Frances Anderton interviews a world-class team of experts on the different ways in which resilience and sustainability may be defined and applied to architecture’s practice.

“Resilience is about our capacity to change and adapt,” said panelist Rachel Minnery, AIA, a disaster resiliency activist formerly with Architecture for Humanity.

“We have a growing middle class that aspires to live the suburban lifestyle, but the suburbs are not as resilient and not as healthy as we once thought they were,” said keynote panelist Ellen Dunham-Jones, AIA, co-author of <em>Retrofitting Suburbia</em>.

“The issues around sustainability have to do with social cohesion,” said MacArthur Fellow and urban revitalization strategist Majora Carter. “Good planning, good architecture, and good building can help that.”

“Sustainability is fundamentally about health,” said keynote panelist Robin Guenther, FAIA, a principal at Perkins+Will and co-author of <em>Sustainable Healthcare Architecture</em>.

Thursday night’s Women In Architecture dinner, held at Swisshotel in Chicago and sponsored by the AIA Diversity Council, featured U.S. Virgin Islands architect and entrepreneur Stacy Bourne, FAIA, who shared her experiences in designing vibrant communities.

Recipients of the 2014 AIA Honor Awards for Architecture gathered on Thursday to recognize 11 projects that elevate design’s quality, establish a standard of performance, and inform the public about the value and breadth of architecture.

Emerging professionals from around the country gathered at AIA Town Hall to play mini-golf and celebrate advances young architects are making in today’s profession.

At a donor appreciation reception on Thursday night in the crown of the Chicago Tribune Tower, ArchiPAC celebrated its 1515 membership recruitment campaign.

Representatives from 13 countries, the AIA, ACSA, NAAB, NCARB, and the UIA gathered on Friday at the International Presidents’ Forum, sponsored by the AIA International Practice Committee. “In my experience, travelling from country to country, everyone thinks the grass is always greener somewhere else,” said Albert Dubler, Hon. AIA, President of the International Union of Architects. “Let’s dare to have a more positive way of thinking. When you invest in communities, you must invest in culture.”
