AIA Honolulu Celebrates Diversity of Residential Architecture

Alternately budget-conscious and luxurious, the buildings honored in AIA Honolulu’s 54th annual Design Awards showcase the breadth and depth of residential architecture. Special award categories include the 6th annual People’s Choice Award and the Mayor’s Choice Award. <br><br>Award of Excellence: The Ruddell Family House in Kaua‘i, Hawaii, designed by Moore Ruble Yudell. Climate considerations played a central role in the building’s form and function. A porous design opens the house to eastern winds, optimizing ventilation while preserving views of the valley and ocean. The project is a dynamic yet harmonious composition that has woven the building, landscape and its residents together. Jury comments: The site and floor plans of the individual pavilions have been thoughtfully resolved. There is great spatial variety within the pavilions and the covered lānai. Award of Excellence: Omidyar K-1 Neighborhood Punahou School in Honolulu, designed by Urban Works. In 2011, this project received LEED Platinum certification. Captured rainwater is used for the children’s gardens, while photovoltaic panels help to sustain the K-1 Neighborhood’s energy needs. Jury comments: The school celebrates sustainability and is a wonderful place for young children. While the classrooms and outdoor spaces support children’s activities, the project has a civic scale that fits the overall campus. Image courtesy of Augie Salbosa Photography.

Award of Excellence and Mayor’s Choice Award: The Ariyoshi Residence in Honolulu, designed by Collaborative Studio. Honolulu Mayor Peter Carlisle commends Collaborative Studio on creating a learning opportunity between the client, architect and builder to create a successful modern green living design solution that was affordable. Jury comments: The house is an extraordinary transformation through the creative use of daylighting, recycled materials and warm and neutral colors. Award of Merit: Kaimana-Hilain in Honolulu, designed by Geoffrey Lewis Architect Inc. Jury comments: The architect took great care in retaining the charm and character of the historic shingle-style residence. The restoration is respectful and skillfully executed. Award of Merit and the Jack C. Lipman, AIA, Members Choice Award: C-MORE Hale Center for Microbial Oceanography Research and Education building in Manoa, Hawaii, designed by Group 70 International. C-MORE represents the new era of science, and is the first laboratory in Hawaii to receive LEED Platinum certification. People’s Choice Award: Maui Arts and Cultural Center – Yokouchi Family Pavilion and Courtyard in Kahului, Hawaii, designed by John Hara Associates. The new Yokouchi Family Pavilion and Courtyard at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center enhances the center’s ability to offer the highest quality performing and visual artists to the community. It provides a welcoming new environment to interact with the arts and artists, and intermingle with fellow community members. Unbuilt Award: Department of Hawaiian Home Lands’ Kauhale Pilot Project in Keaukaha and Waimea, Hawaii, designed by Collaborative Studio. Jury comments: Recognizing the social importance of this project, the jury applauded the design, which exhibits great sensitivity toward the multigenerational inhabitants. Unbuilt Award: 5B in Waimea, Hawaii, designed by Rhoady Lee ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN. Jury comments: The nature of a residence with respect to privacy and openness have been inverted, creating a unique design response. The floor plan of the glass house is skillfully resolved. Unbult Award: A‘ama Nui (Private Residence) in Keaukaha, Hawaii, designed by WCIT Architecture. Jury comments: The use of simple architectural elements was commended.
