AIA New York State Awards Reach Across the Pacific to Asia

Many of AIA New York State’s 2011 design awards are located in Asia, a testament to the ever-more global market for architecture and the international ingenuity of AIA members. The component’s 2011 awards honored <a href='http://www.aia.org/practicing/AIAB093527'>28 total projects</a>, selected by jury members from Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and New York. Here are seven Award of Excellence receipients. International Award of Excellence: Taichung InfoBox in Taichung, Taiwan, designed by Stan Allen Architect. Jury comments: While purposely located in an artifact of the site’s previous use, the message behind the restrained bamboo detailing was: Put it up, take it down, and then let’s get on with a better life! Institutional Award of Excellence: Cornell Plantations Welcome Center in Ithaca, N.Y., designed by Baird Sampson Neuert Architects. Jury comments: This small jewel of a building appears like an extension of the landscape as it purposefully facilitates the flow of visitors between the indoor didactic exhibits and meeting rooms, and the numerous outdoor gardens. Urban Planning Design Award of Excellence: SandRidge Commons in Oklahoma City, designed by Rogers Marvel Architects. Jury comments: The designers proposed a series of newer buildings as well as extensive public green spaces that serve as a framework for extending the existing city center. Commericial/Industrial Small Projects Award of Excellence: The Marc Jacobs Flagship Buildings in Tokyo, designed by Jaklitsch/Gardner Architects. Jury comments: [We were] particularly impressed by the innovative illuminated “ghost wall” which takes advantage of local zoning laws to add presence and height.” Image courtesy of Liao Yusheng.

Historic Preservation Award of Excellence: Thomas Edison National Historical Park in West Orange, N. J., designed by Beyer Blinder Belle Architects and Planners. Jury comments: This project had as its intial tasks a comprehensive systems upgrade, restoration of a number of buildings and new access to iconic spaces such as Edison’s office. Interiors Award of Excellence: Inverted Warehouse/Townhouse in New York City, designed by Dean/Wolf Architects. Jury comments: [We were] entranced by the simultaneous readings of the interior and exterior spaces. Canyons of space are enclosed or clad in a rich variety of materials, all selected for their ability to address both indoor and outdoor conditions. Image courtesy of Paul Warchol.

Best in New York State: Inverted Warehouse/Townhouse in New York City, designed by Dean/Wolf Architects. Jury comments: This project simultaneously addressed the scale of the city, the building, and the hand. [We were] entranced by how meticulous detailing meets an Escher-like sense of space.
