The Long-Awaited “Front Door” to American Democracy Swings Open with the Capitol Visitor Center
Delayed no longer, the center settles in under and looks up to the Capitol
The new Capitol Visitor Center in Washington, D.C., slides a staging area for visitors taking tours of the Capitol under the east lawn of the building in deference to its iconic dome and profile. This addition is also formally and materially deferent to the Federalist precedents of the Capitol complex. An exception to this is the Visitor Center’s Exhibition Hall, which uses contemporary and theatrical contrasting colors along with heavy monumental masonry. Since the Visitor Center was conceived in the 1970s, it has undergone many delays and budget increases.

CBT Unites Social and Environmental Responsibility in Habitat for Humanity Project
Construction began earlier this month on a new home for South Shore Habitat for Humanity in Stoughton, Mass., thanks in part to CBT Architects, who donated the design and a substantial contribution to the construction costs for the house in honor of the Boston firm’s 40th Anniversary. Structural engineering firm McNamara Salvia and landscape architects Copley Wolff also have donated their design time and talent to the project. Building on the idea of the standard Habitat bungalow, CBT’s clean, Modern design offers the perception of a larger living space as well as a focus on sustainability in three areas: individual and community welfare, conservation and regeneration, and energy. "CBT's design has us rethinking our approach on how we build going forward. By helping us to understand that a green house can be affordable, we will be more prepared to do the right thing for the communities where we build and for the environment," says Jerry McDermott, the executive director of South Shore Habitat for Humanity, in a press release. "CBT's Habitat House is about building a smart, green future home that helps us envision a new standard in best practices incorporating sustainable building strategies." Bohemian National Hall Flourishes Anew
The Bohemian National Hall aims to market itself as a distinctive, recognizable, elegant gathering spot in New York City and establish itself as a brand associated with a specific segment of the city’s cultural life. It is a place with character and with the specific angle of bringing and presenting Czech culture, in its diversity, to a city of diversity, not simply an ordinary open space to be rented, says a marketing representative for the century-old building.
