AIA Conferences and Special Events 1. How You Can Help AIA Members Meet Their Sustainable Design Requirements! The AIA has an annual continuing education (CE) requirement for architect members of 18-hours, which includes 8 learning units (LU) in HSW of which 4 LU must address sustainable design (SD). This sustainable design requirement became effective in 2009 and extends through 2012. In a recent audit conducted on AIA members, 19, 941 members have NOT met the sustainable design requirement. What you as a Provider can do to help? We strongly encourage you to review any existing courses you are offering to see if they would possibly qualify for sustainable design. If they do, please re-submit the courses online using a Form A with a new course title and course number. We have created a special webpage completely devoted to SD courses our AIA Providers and AIA Components are offering. We are directing members who have not met their requirements to this page so they can access the courses quickly and easily. If you offer courses in SD (face to face or online) and would like to have them listed, please contact Sara Thomas with your provider name, course title, course date, and a link to the course information, your website, or link from course directory from the AIA website. 2. AIA/CES Provider Workshop: How to Develop a Sustainable Design Course Hosted by AIA National in conjunction with AIA Seattle - December 16, 2009 Because the need for sustainable design courses is so strong at this time, this workshop will not only cover the AIA/CES SD requirements, but walk you through examples of existing courses and how to target your audience to meet their needs. Through lecture, round table discussion, and demonstrations, AIA/CES Registered Providers in this workshop should be able to successfully develop and register a quality SD continuing education course meeting the AIA/CES SD requirements and guidelines Learning Objectives:
Guest Speakers include Janet Stephenson, AIA Seattle and Stephanie Vierra, Assoc. AIA, Vierra Design & Education Services, LLC For more information and to register for this workshop, please

If you do not already take advantage of our online system, please do so. It is the quickest and easiest way for forms to be submitted, reviewed, and processed. 6. CES Tip of the Month: Did You Know That… The Colorado State Licensing board requires that there be something following a class to determine that architects retained the knowledge learned in the class. This can be done by either by taking a test following a class (keep quiz/results as proof) OR by filling out a one-page structured form from the licensing board with questions that will ask them to demonstrate that they retained knowledge from the class. Architects need to keep this information on file (along with brochure or literature about the program) in case they are audited. What does this mean to you as a provider? Many providers think that they must offer a quiz in order for their course to count for architects in Colorado, when in fact you may offer courses to them, with or without a quiz at the end. In addition, if you offer a course without a quiz to architects in Colorado, please kindly remind them to fill out the one-page structured form found on their state licensing boards website. 7.
