"Macro Storage" error message

Technical Issue Description

When generating a Working Draft or Form Draft document, the user receives the following message: Cannot Open Macro Storage.

Answer

You will receive this error message if your Normal.dot file in Microsoft Word is corrupt. To address this issue, temporarily rename the Normal.dot template to determine whether it is the cause of the problem. Renaming the Normal.dot template resets several options back to their default settings, including custom styles, custom toolbars, and macros.

Tip: If multiple versions of Word are running on the same PC or there are several user profiles on the same PC, there may be more than one legitimate Normal.dot file. Ensure that you rename the correct copy of Normal.dot.

To rename the Normal.dot file:

  1. Close Microsoft Word and all other programs that use Word, such as Outlook. These instructions will not work unless these programs are closed. If you are unsure which programs are open, restart your PC.

  1. Right-click on Start and choose Search.

  2. Search for the Normal.dot file.

  3. Rename the file to OldNormal.dot.

  4. Launch AIA Contract Documents software.

  5. Double-click on a Working Draft document.

  6. If Word starts correctly, you have resolved the problem of a damaged Normal.dot template. If you need additional help, click Getting Additional Help.

Tip: It is strongly recommended that you rename the Normal.dot file rather than deleting it, so that you can restore these settings if the template is not corrupt.
