The American Institute of Architects : A panel discussion to accompany the Context\Contrast exhibition

The American Institute of Architects cordially invites you to a panel discussion to accompany Context\Contrast: New Architecture in Historic Districts, an exhibition currently on view at AIA headquarters.

The exhibit explores the role and realization of new architecture in urban historic districts looking at examples from New York relevant to cities around the country.

The panel, which includes distinguished preservationists, architects, and government officials from both cities, will discuss the challenges of ensuring that our historic districts continue to evolve through the insertion of new buildings. Panelists will look at the process of governmental regulation and oversight, and discuss how practitioners can, and do, approach the challenges of designing for historic contexts. The discussion, which will offer cross-cultural comparisons of New York and Washington DC, will be led by:

  • Tersh Boasberg, Chair, Historic Preservation Review Board, Washington, DC
  • Anne McCutcheon Lewis, FAIA, architect, Washington, DC
  • Sherida E, Paulsen, FAIA, principal, PKSB architects, New York City
  • Robert B. Tierney, Chair, Landmarks Preservation Commission, New York City
  • Robert Peck, Commissioner of Public Buildings, General Services Administration

The discussion is sponsored by the American Institute of Architects, AIA New York and AIA Washington DC, and the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission.
