AIA Grassroots 2013, the Leadership and Legislative Conference, is an essential professional development resource for those who want to lead more effectively.

REPOSITIONING

Much of the focus of this year’s Grassroots Leadership and Legislative Conference is AIA’s Repositioning Initiative and the architects’ role as leaders in transforming our organization into one that is valued by our members. Listed below are many opportunities to participate in discussions, conversations, workshops, and networking opportunities that equip you with skills, insights, and messages to effect real change.

Wednesday, March 20

3:15–5:00 p.m.
Keynote Address
Frank Stasiowski, FAIA, will address the future of the profession, and provide insights into the bold new approach to how we must shape our profession.

Thursday, March 21

3:30–4:30 p.m.
Repositioning Presentation
Arthur Cohen, LaPlaca Cohen, and Michael Beruit, Pentagram, will share background information, survey results, and overall comments about the Repositioning Initiative.

5:30 p.m.
Institute Open House
You’ll have the opportunity to share your reactions and insights to the Repositioning Initiative presentation.

Friday, March 22

7:00–8:15 a.m.
Component Peer Group Breakfasts
Join with your peers to share information and ideas on Repositioning.

9:20–10:20 a.m.
Repositioning Open-Forum
Mickey Jacob, FAIA, AIA President, and Robert Ivy, FAIA, EVP/Chief Executive Officer, will present a Repositioning action plan on near and long-term efforts necessary for success.

10:30–11:30 a.m.
Repositioning Workshops
There will be Repositioning workshops to facilitate discussion on four key topics. You will have the opportunity to shape the action plan.

11:45 a.m.–1:30 p.m.
Lunch Program
After lunch, members of the Repositioning Steering Committee will share some of the key points covered during the workshops.

3:30–5:15 p.m.
General Session
Harrison Coerver will examine the future of organizations and changes in the way we think about association governance and management.

EDUCATION AND INSPIRATION

Additionally, Leadership Plenary Sessions and Component Operational Sessions will be offered on Friday and Saturday.

Friday, March 22

1:45–3:15 p.m.
Four concurrent leadership workshops will be offered. Some are repeated on Saturday.

Workshop 1. Leading through Change (1.5 LUs)
Address the process of change and the path that architects must take to guide and lead its process.

Workshop 2. Leading through Inspiration and Influence (1.5 LUs)
Learn techniques for improving influence skills by structuring influence messages so that others will be more willing to consider them.

Workshop 3. Leading through Vision (1.5 LUs)
Examine elements of visionary leadership and how to plant the seeds of the organizational vision in the hearts of members.

Workshop 4. Personal Leadership: Creating a Plan of Action (1.5 LUs)
Explore the topic of leader effectiveness as the ability to bring influence to bear on people and organizations.

Saturday, March 23

9–10:30 a.m.
Concurrent workshops are offered in two time slots on Saturday morning. In addition to leadership workshops, there are also sessions that address operational topics for component executives and staff members.

Workshop 1: Board Roles and Goals (1.5 LUs)
Learn the legal and governance issues critical to organizational operations, including bylaws, elections of officers, and anti-trust and other legal issues.

Workshop 2: Leading through Change (1.5 LUs)

Workshop 3: Personal Leadership: Creating a Plan of Action (1.5 LUs)
Encore presentation

Workshop 4: What You Need to Know to Avoid Legal, Ethical, and Governance Issues (1.5 LUs)
What role should the board play in the day-to-day operation of the organization? What are the potential liabilities of board members? What legal protections exist?

10:30 a.m.–noon

Workshop 1: Board Roles and Goals (1.5 LUs)

Workshop 4: Understanding Your Component's Financial Responsibilities (1.5 LUs)
Develop sound financial information and concise financial reports, present this information to your board, and be prepared for IRS audits.
