Letter from the Chair

At the beginning of each year our AAJ Journal committee holds a planning session to identify hot topics and themes relevant to our justice markets. This year we are featuring a series of articles focused on PREA and Restorative Justice. This 1st Quarter Journal features articles on each of these topics, our recurring Emerging Professional Profile as well as a special report on the “The Future of Courts 2025:  The Future of the Courthouse?"

Last September I participated in a Correctional Summit where professionals and peers within the justice design and construction community discussed what our industry has accomplished, shared ideas on how to better serve our clients, looked at current industry trends, and anticipated new challenges that are on the horizon.  Planners, designers, constructors, vendor/suppliers, and a publisher participated. A session that touched on Juvenile reform, alternative to incarceration and restorative justice initiatives within our justice markets triggered lively discussion during the Summit. In “Our KODAK MOMENT:  Balancing Our Social Responsibility with Profitability” I share my thoughts on a particular discussion that stood out for me. I also engaged Meredith Berman of Sierra Detention Systems in discussion about the topic as I was interested in getting the perspective of the “vendor/supplier” side of the issue. In “The Societal Price of the Status-Quo,” Ms. Berman shares her thoughts.

By Phillip Knox and Peter Kiefer

When we began a year and a half ago surveying court professionals on their vision of the future of courts, we were unprepared for the variety of fascinating stories and questions that would arise. The condition of our nation’s courthouses is an interesting story; the perception of court professionals regarding courthouses and future construction is a good question.

Our KODAK MOMENT: Balancing Our Social Responsibility with Profitability

By April Pottorff, AIA

Last September I participated in a Correctional Summit where professionals and peers within the justice design and construction community discussed what our industry has accomplished, shared ideas on how to better serve our clients, looked at current industry trends, and anticipated new challenges that are on the horizon.  Planners, designers, constructors, vendor/suppliers, and a publisher participated.  Although this was my first time to attend many of the attendees have participated in the Summit for many years.

The Societal Price of the Status-quo

By Meredith Berman

At this moment in time, the corrections industry faces the often-unasked question facing a free market economy: how much is enough? The necessity of this question is illustrated in the prison industrial complex, which asks how it is ethical that one group of businesses benefits from the incarceration of others. While those that lack a sufficient understanding of the corrections system usually ask this question, pieces of its essence are worthy of discussion. As an industry, it’s time to question the acceptability of selling status quo products and services that are socially damaging, but corporately profitable.

Design Implications of PREA for Adult Facilities

By Laurence E. Hartman, AIA

Is it too simplistic to think that, like the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) is another noble intent of the Federal government whose impact on planning and design is not initially understood. I remind myself not to be so cynical. PREA addresses the very serious issue of sexual abuse of those incarcerated in our secure facilities.

This white paper is a proposition for the role of the justice system in contributing to the continuing viability of our society. Intended to complement other public initiatives with the year 2030 as the planning horizon, we aim to articulate a vision for how green justice buildings can serve a green and sustainable justice system as a foundational element of a sustainable society. As architects, our planning and design efforts are framed by the vision of our clients; this paper is intended to illustrate a vision for the year 2030 that is holistic and elevated in aspiration to create a more just and sustainable society.
