Features

Active design can promote good health

Architecture and physical fitness may seem completely disconnected, but buildings and public spaces that get the heart rate climbing and muscles moving — by promoting activities such as walking, bicycling and stair-climbing — are at the heart of cutting-edge urban design.

With the scarcity of health care dollars already preventing people from receiving access to basic care, it's easy to look on hospitals' pouring of money into design as unconscionable excess.

Construction That Focuses on Health of Residents

By Joe Gose, The New York Times

Doctors, social agencies and community groups that have long been frustrated by the inability to alleviate environmental conditions that contribute to ailments like heart disease and obesity are promoting the idea that a shift in land-use planning and design can stanch some of the harmful influences. The concept is being put to one of its earliest and biggest tests in the La Alma/Lincoln Park neighborhood near downtown Denver.
