Smartest places on Earth
Why rustbelts are the emerging hotspots of global innovation
Maybe it takes a couple of Dutch guys to teach Americans about optimism and tell us that not all is lost for American Industry. Agtmael puts it this way: Smart innovation is replacing cheap labor as the competitive edge. How do we take advantage of this trend?

People are the foundations of cities
"Do we train our students to work at these huge firms on big jobs....that they build a skyscraper in Dubai? Or do we train our students to work in communities? To understand how communities tick?" David Lewis, FAIA, talks about community involvement in the design process in this short video.

Why Local Governments Need an Architect At the Table
Layering design and planning expertise with local knowledge, architects can bring an objective, analytical perspective to the organizations that run their communities. "We can be the ones to say, 'This highway will do great things, but it will separate this whole neighborhood from the services they need. You're going to put more people in cars,' " says J. Christopher Ball, AIA.

How Architecture and City Planning Can Combat Social Inequality
The future might seem like a bleak place if you're a fan of science fiction, but somewhat less so if you're architect and Columbia professor Vishaan Chakrabarti, AIA. "I'm a big believer in what I like to call discursive public space...where you run into people and run into ideas, and I think that is really fundamental to how a good city works and how innovation occurs."

The role that architecture can play in the development agenda
As we begin to take on the new Sustainable Development Goals architecture figures prominently in the propagation and implementation of the goals on the global stage. Given the leading role of the architect in how cities are envisioned and designed the architect can directly shape the outcomes of a design process to the betterment of a community’s overall quality of life, sustainability, social equity, health and resilience.
