Please join us for the HRC brunch with architectural historian Christine Madrid French!

In the decades that followed the Second World War, Florida became an incubator for innovative and experimental modern architecture. As much as 80 percent of the state's built environment was constructed between 1945 and 1975. A mostly unspoiled, sub-tropical paradise, Florida served as an architectural tabula rasa that progressive minded designers--homegrown, transplants, and outliers--began to transform. Learn more >

A Future for the House of Tomorrow

By Jennifer Sandy, National Trust for Historic Preservation and Todd Zeiger, Indiana Landmarks

The House of Tomorrow, a building that architecture critic Paul Goldberger calls "one of the true early monuments of American modernism," has languished for decades in an increasingly decayed state atop a sand dune in Northwest Indiana—but not for much longer. Designed by Chicago architect George Fred Keck for the 1933-1934 Chicago Century of Progress World’s Fair, the house was recently named a National Treasure by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

In the midst of the Great Depression, the House of Tomorrow offered millions of fairgoers a hopeful vision of a brighter, easier future. The visionary structure then followed an unlikely path to Beverly Shores, Indiana. This hidden gem of Modern architecture will soon see restoration thanks to a new partnership of Indiana Landmarks and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Read more >
