Reports from HRC Partners and Allied Organizations Coordination Meeting | March 21, 2014

Following the HABS Coordinating Committee meeting on March 21st, representatives from many of the HRC’s partner and allied organizations gathered to participate in a coordination meeting to provide information about their organizations and let HRC members know what challenges they are currently facing, opportunities that they see emerging, and to discuss how we may all work together to strengthen the historic preservation movement. Many thanks to RTKL for graciously providing a great meeting space. And a special thanks to all who participated in meeting, contributed reports, and made the afternoon gathering such a success. Reports from the NPS Historic American Building Survey and Library of Congress

The HABS Coordinating Committee met Friday, March 21, 2014, in the Main Conference Room at the corporate offices of RTKL in Washington, DC. In addition to committee members representatives from many of the HRC’s Partner and Allied Organizations were in attendance. The Role for Architects in Federal Historic Tax Credit Projects

WAYNE N. ASPINALL FEDERAL BUILDING AND U.S. COURTHOUSE

AIA Committee on The Environment honors historic preservation project

WAYNE N. ASPINALL FEDERAL BUILDING AND U.S. COURTHOUSE

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) and its Committee on the Environment (COTE) have selected the top ten examples of sustainable architecture and ecological design projects that protect and enhance the environment. The projects will be honored at the AIA 2014 National Convention and Design Exposition in Chicago.  One of these projects, a LEED® Platinum renovation, preserves an anchor in Grand Junction, and converts the 1918 landmark into one of the most energy efficient, sustainable historic buildings in the country. The design aims to be GSA’s first Site Net-Zero Energy facility on the National Register.  Read more about the project.

MEASURED DRAWINGS PRIZE DEADLINE:  JUNE 30, 2014

Charles Peterson Prize

The deadline for submissions for the 2014 Leicester B. Holland Prize and Charles E. Peterson Prize is June 30, 2014. The Holland Prize, a competition open to both students and professionals, recognizes the best single-sheet measured drawing of an historic site, structure, or landscape prepared by an individual(s) to HABS/HAER/HALS standards and guidelines. The Peterson Prize, a competition open to students, recognizes the best sets of historic drawings prepared by an individual(s) to HABS/HAER/HALS standards and guidelines.

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS: WEBMASTER

The AIA Historic Resources Committee Advisory Group is searching for a volunteer webmaster to consolidate the submittal and upload of individual items to the HRC website.  The website is hosted by the AIA and training/protocols will be provided.  If you’ve been thinking about getting involved with the HRC, this is a great way to meet its leadership and help in a much-needed capacity.  The estimated time commitment is 2-5 hours/month. The mission of the HRC is to identify, understand, and preserve architectural heritage, both nationally and internationally. HRC is engaged in promoting the role of the historic architect within the profession through the development of information and knowledge among members, allied professional organizations, and the public. RICHARD MORRIS HUNT FELLOWSHIP 2015 CALL FOR CANDIDATES

Since 1990, the Richard Morris Hunt Fellowship, co-sponsored by the American Architectural Foundation and the French Heritage Society, offers mid-career American and French licensed architects an intensive six-month exchange experience that showcases the latest scholarship and practice around historic preservation and architectural heritage. The program is supported in part through a generous gift from Lafarge. The 2015 Call for Candidates is now open.
