When I joined the Advisory Group in 2010, the Knowledge Communities were just finding their new footings. The AIA national component provides less direct support but more liberty to design, underwrite, and execute programs that serve members.

PRESERVATION MATTERS III - THE ECONOMICS OF AUTHENTICITY

How US Cities Have Reversed Decline through Historic Preservation Programs

Symposium: Wednesday, April 16, 2014 - 5:30pm to Thursday, April 17, 2014 - 8:00pm; Tulane University

Preservation Matters III

Urban populations declined drastically since 1945 in many if not most cities in the United States, especially in town centers and older neighborhoods. Owing to national preservation programs such as the National Register, rehabilitation tax credits, Main Street, Section 106 review process and others, as well as state and local efforts, there has been a dramatic reversal of this decline in many cities. However, very few cities have come close to regaining their peak populations; the work remains challenging. This symposium aims to convey a greater understanding of urban preservation programs: their successes, obstacles and the future. Read more.

EXPLORE THE REVITALIZATION OF THE 42ND STREET THEATRE DISTRICT

2014 AIA REKC Conference
May 15, 2014 in New York, NY
; Attendees may earn up to 6 HSW LUs

New Amsterdam Room

The Retail and Entertainment Knowledge Community (REKC) 2014 Conference will examine how entertainment architecture, specifically theatre and performing arts venues, have been instrumental in revitalizing a critical urban district - 42nd Street, from a derelict area back into a vital and vibrant entertainment district and international tourism draw.

Explore the lobbies, auditorium, backstage and dressing room areas of the New Amsterdam, Nederlander, and Foxwoods Theatres. Also, visit the Disney offices that were Ziegfeld's private theatre.

As an added benefit, take advantage of tickets to see Aladdin at the Nederlander, and close the evening with a special reception to meet and talk with some of the speakers as well as theatre folks in a ‘wrap’ party for the conference.

The 2014 Emerging Professional Scholarships are now available to download and submit by April 4, 2014.
