Letter from the Chair

Hello AIA COTE:

Welcome to the September equinox (for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere). I don’t know exactly why, but I find autumn a keen sensory reminder of the earth’s cycles. Is it the crispness in the air, the color of the leaves, or the frantic scurrying of the squirrels? In any case, it is a time for reflection, for assessing recent work and looking for the best project submission for the COTE Top Ten and COTE Top Ten Plus Awards.

Rand Ekman

Yes, that’s a long winded reminder that the AIA’s preeminent award program deliberately honoring beauty and performance is coming up. We look forward to another inspiring batch of submissions.

For those of you who are engaged with Architecture Schools, let’s not forget the COTE Top Ten for Students.

The AIA COTE has so much to do as we advance our profession, and we hope this monthly communication will help. For an amazing glimpse of all that COTE has accomplished in the past 25 years take a look at the COTE Timeline.

Lastly, if you are interested in exploring the topic of Whole-Building Life Cycle Assessment please consider the 2015 Taliesin Colloquium on October 9-10, a joint event between COTE and the Historic Resources Committee (HRC). We hope to see you there!

Cheers,

Rand Ekman Signature

Women Leadership Summit

I’m on the way back from the 5th biennial AIA Women’s Leadership Summit (WLS) held this year in Seattle. This was a sold-out event of 300+ architects from all across the country who represent women in all stages of their careers and career paths. It was an inspirational and motivational occasion for all. The event started with a look at the data of women and people of color in our profession, with a preview of the AIA’s new Diversity Survey results.
