Committee on Design

2015 Welcome from the Chair

Members of the Committee on Design:

I am honored to be the 2015 Chair of the Committee on Design. COD has an exciting lineup of activities planned for 2015! Here is a sneak peak of our events:

International Conference
Norway - Oslo/Bergen June 21-27 and Stavanger June 28-30

National AIA Awards Celebration Dinner and Reception
The Woodruff Art Center in Atlanta, at the 2015 AIA National Convention, May 14

National Conference
Providence, Rhode Island - September 25-27

The theme for 2015 is ‘Locally Grown’.

"To make a place, is to make a domain that helps people know where they are, and by extension, know who they are."  Charles W. Moore FAIA

As a ‘progeny’ of Charles Moore, I have always been intrigued by place-making. I imagine you have similar aspirations: how does one create something that is globally inspiring and locally relevant?

Norway is a country with a small population whose economy historically relied on fishing and farming. Their rural, natural environment has been, and still is, a dominant influence on Norwegians and their architecture.Their recent oil boom has brought unprecedented wealth which has helped fund projects from cultural buildings to housing. We will see how their devotion to nature and recent international attention is fueling Norwegian architects to develop their own distinct version of modern architecture. For more conference details, please see the COD website and a selection of proposed projects we will visit.

Providence, on the other hand, is forging forward on a shoe-string, yet it too provides compelling examples of how locally-inspired architecture, planning, and design can lead the rebirth of a place and help define its spirit.

We will hold our 5th annual party to celebrate with the national design award winners, including the Gold Medal and Firm Award, during the national convention in Atlanta. The party will be held at the Woodruff Art Center, in the atrium of the High Museum.

I look forward to seeing you at these events. I think you will find them inspiring and that they will recharge your batteries.

All the best,

Jim Childress, FAIA
