Letter from the Leadership Group

The AAJ Leadership Group would like to update the AAJ membership on changes we have undergone over the last few months. Our Emerging Professional member, Amy Phillips, resigned in February due to a recent promotion to Project Manager at Jacobs Global Buildings. Observing her leadership skills through her involvement in the AAJ, Jacobs has asked Amy to become more engaged in the St. Louis Chapter of the AIA while the firm shifts its focus away from the justice market. Although we are very sad to lose an enthusiastic and energetic young leader, please join us in wishing Amy much success in her new position.

We are pleased to announce that after careful consideration, we have chosen Erin Costino Persky to replace Amy as our Emerging Professional member. Erin has been a member of the AAJ since 2012 and was instrumental in the creation of the JFR database launched last year. She has most recently acted as chair of the AAJ Communications Committee, after having served as a member of the committee for over two years under its long-time chair, April Pottorff. Erin will continue her involvement in the Communications Committee as the LG liaison. Please welcome Erin to the Leadership Group.

Letter from the Chair

This is an exciting time for the AAJ - as you read in the previous issue, the committees are each busy with various initiatives and the conference is inching ever closer. I've also heard great things about the AIA Convention; if you attended the AIA Convention in Atlanta and have something relevant that you'd like to contribute to the journal, please feel free to contact one of the Communications Committee members.

This issue features two recent Law Enforcement projects, including the LAPD Metropolitan Division Facility and the Washington, D.C. Consolidated Forensic Lab. The Emerging Professional Profile this quarter features the newest member of the Communications Committee, Tommy Sinclair, Senior Design Professional at HOK.

Sustainable Justice Principles Case Study: A Story of Transformation in the LAPD

By Leigh Christy, AIA, LEED AP BD+C and Nick Seierup, FAIA, NCARB, LEED AP BD+C

The LAPD Metropolitan Division, originally known as the Reserve Unit, was founded in 1933 as a transformative, compact mobile crime-fighting unit in a rapidly growing city dealing with the repercussions of thirteen years of Prohibition. In 1967, LAPD transformed law enforcement strategies in an era of civil unrest and rising crime rates by forming the first Special Weapons and Tactics Unit (SWAT Team). In 1971, the SWAT Team joined LAPD Metro, creating the elite, tactical division of today - a group whose mission is to support the Department's community-based policing efforts to reduce the incidence and the fear of crime on a citywide basis.

DC Consolidated Forensic Lab: The Future Is Now

By Gregory Cook, AIA, LEED® AP BD+C, CCHP and Jeff Bradley

A fundamental principle of our legal system is the belief that the legal process will lead to Justice, and forensic science is an essential component of that process. Forensic science supports judicial processes by using technology to reveal evidence in civil and criminal cases. In an effort to meet more complex challenges, forensic labs are becoming more efficient and agile, enabling scientists from various backgrounds to collaborate together, in order to work faster and smarter.

University Outreach

One of the new priorities for all AIA Knowledge Communities is to reach out to emerging professionals which includes architecture students. In fact, the goal of the Academy of Architecture for Justice is to locate future national conferences in cities which have universities with architecture programs. We would endeavor to partner with these universities to involve students in design charrettes, research, and potentially, conference sessions. It would be necessary for the AAJ's Advisory Group and the conference planning committees to have a liaison with any university with whom we partner. Ideally, the liaison would be an alumnus of the institution or have strong ties to the dean or professors in the architecture program.

In order to help establish the AAJ's ties to each university, we respectfully request that any of you who have strong ties to a university email me with a list of those institutions so we can establish a database for planning purposes. Furthermore, if you are interested in being a liaison with this university in the future, please reply accordingly. My email address is llopez@nachtlewis.com

Thank you,
Lorenzo Lopez, AIA
Academy of Architecture for Justice Advisory Group Chair

2015 AAJ Fall Conference Theme Announced: Challenging the Status Quo

Save the Date: November 18-21, 2015 | Conrad Miami Hotel -- Miami

This year's Academy of Architecture for Justice Conference is focusing on the future of justice and we are calling all planners and design professionals to challenge the status quo. How you define the status quo itself is going to add depth and diversity to the discussions that come out of our panels and it's an important preamble to proposals. We are looking forward to hearing about your experiences with clients from around the globe, and how their points of view and budgets are moving the future of justice in a real way. We want to know how your design and planning solutions respond to shape the clients' visions.
