Letter from the Editor

Welcome to the December edition of the Academy Update. I hope many of you were able to attend the HealthcareDesign Conference in Washington, DC in November. I enjoyed seeing many Academy members as we celebrated our 70th anniversary. As we end 2015 and transition into the new year, so does our board and leadership of the Academy. Please join me in thanking Tatiana Guimaraes for her leadership and service to the Board for this past year and many years leading up to her Presidency. We owe her great commendation and gratitude. We also celebrate the transition of leadership to Joan Suchomel, who will continue to march forward the ideals and responsibilities of the Academy into a new year of progress and prosperity. Please join me in congratulating Joan and supporting her in 2016.

The feature of this edition of the Academy Update highlights the relevance and importance of the Patient-Centered Medical Home. Thank you to Brenna Costello, AIA, EDAC, Principal | Healthcare Studio and Erin McNamara, EDAC, Associate | Health Practice Manager both with the SmithGroupJJR.

As always, we value the input and support of our membership.  If you have a particular interest for this publication or communications, please feel free to contact me. The quality of this publication is dependent on participation from our valued membership!  I hope you enjoy this edition.

Kind Regards,

Marc

AAH President's Note

By AAH 2015 President, Tatiana Guimaraes, Assoc. AIA

Tatiana Guimaraes, Assoc. AIA

To our dear Academy of Architecture for Health members:

It is amazing how fast the year has passed by, and I am grateful for the wonderful efforts and progress we had in 2015. It was a very exciting year for us…we celebrated our 70th anniversary! We took time to look at our initiatives (there are over 30 of them!), we reorganized our board and roles, and we developed goals and strategies for our efforts, as well as built a sponsorship program and continued to move forward and build on our existing programs. Wow…what a year.

Feature

The Patient-Centered Medical Home

By Brenna Costello, AIA, EDAC, Principal | Healthcare Studio and Erin McNamara, EDAC, Associate | Health Practice Manager (both with the SmithGroupJJR)

With the advent of health reform, the evolution from a fee to performance model, and the increasing importance of primary care, the medical home concept has gained new traction. Originally introduced by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) in 1967, the concept was defined as the central coordination of a child's medical records. Over time, the model has evolved to encompass patient- and family-centered care and population health concepts. The primary goal: to improve, through better collaboration, the quality of care while reducing healthcare costs.

Codes and Standards

By Chair, Chad E. Beebe, AIA, SASHE

The Codes and Standards Committee set out this year to create several sub-committees and to expand our look at the primary codes and standards that apply to healthcare facilities. In years past the Academy focused only on the FGI Guidelines, but we know there are many other codes and standards that affect healthcare. Many codes are being developed without considerable input from the architectural community, yet we are probably the single largest user of these documents.

Who Will be Your Next Client?

The Academy of Architecture for Health has teamed up with ASHE and the American Hospital Association to provide a great opportunity for healthcare architects. The Architectural Showcase and Compendium is a great way to get your firms name and selected projects in front of nearly all of the hospital CEO’s in the country. ASHE and AHA have agreed to send the compendium, a published collection of projects and firm contacts to every member hospital CEO member and display the projects in front of nearly 10,000 Facility Managers. In a meeting with ASHE/AHA leadership it was expressed that hospitals CEO’s are on the lookout for more than just the large hospital projects that have typically been submitted. They are looking for examples of projects and firms that deliver creative reuse of space, using existing infrastructure. The showcase is open to all firms, big or small, so get your firm listed today!
