"The mission of the Academy of Architecture for Health is to improve both the quality of healthcare design and the design of healthy communities by developing, documenting, and disseminating knowledge; educating design practitioners and other related constituencies; advancing the practice of architecture; and affiliating and advocating with others that share these priorities."

A ‘New Year’ Message from the AIA/AAH 2011 President

As we begin a New Year, it's a time to reflect on the Mission Statement of the Academy which I've included in our heading above. This will be a year of challenges and opportunities in a time of change. Knowledge gained and shared will be a vital part of equipping ourselves and the industry for success.

The Academy Update comes to you throughout the year with your membership in the AIA Healthcare Knowledge Community. It will keep you informed about Webinars, Conferences and other Important Dates and events. I invite you this year to take the next step and go to www.aia.org/aah and join the conversation on AIAKnowledgeNet by updating your AIA Account . Network with other AAH members around the country. Share useful information with your peers. Join a discussion group. Start a discussion group. Start a blog. It's up to you.

I look forward to the conversations!

Ron Smith, AIA, ACHA, LEED AP

Design & Health 7th World Congress

From the International Academy of Design and Health website

Boston, MA | July 6-10, 2011| IADH website

Design & Health has been uniting the fields of architecture, design, the health sciences, economics and psychology for two decades, achieving its ambition to be one of the most significant health development organisations in the world. Its global status is recognised in the organization of the 7th World Congress for Design & Health in Boston from 6-10 July, 2011.

As excitement builds and preparations get underway, delegates can expect a leading-edge scientific programme that will underpin future professional practice in health promotion by design.

As one of the oldest cities in the USA, and the capital of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Boston is considered the economic and cultural centre of the region. With a rich history dating back to 1630, when the Puritan colonists from England founded the city, Boston is now a major shipping port and manufacturing centre. With its many colleges and universities, the city is also a centre for higher education, research and medicine, providing an ideal setting for the 7th Design & Health World Congress.

Delivered in partnership with the leading professional bodies, academic institutions, health providers and industry sponsors, the congress is set to be more influential than ever before. Connecting researchers and practitioners from all over the world, the congress is a chance to engage with the world's foremost interdisciplinary network of thought leaders, including architects, environmental designers, psychologists, physicians, nurses, health planners, health policy makers and other decision makers.
