AIA PA Cornerstone

Welcome to The Cornerstone 2017

By Marilyn Wong-Wittmer, AIA

I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself to the Public Architects Knowledge Community as your editor for The Cornerstone this year. Part of my goal as editor, is to provide informative articles on the varied practice of public architecture that are shared with us. One event that caters to and supports the public architecture community is our Pre-Convention Public Architects Workshop. We have different topics every year. We invite thought provoking speakers that at times reinforce or provide alternative methods to our practice issues. This year’s workshop “The Public Architect as City Builder” promises to be an outstanding one, so I hope that you will check it out and join us in Orlando.

I also seek to support my fellow Advisory Group members – 2017 Chair Emily Marthinsen, AIA; Lee Solomon, AIA; Susan Goldberg, AIA; and our newest member Samuel Chui, AIA (Welcome, Samuel!).

Our PA community benefits from sharing a newsworthy article – so we hope to hear from you. You can reach me at publicarchitects@aia.org.

A note from The Chair

Some Thoughts About Public Architecture...
Public Architects—City Builders. These words, in the title of this year’s Public Architects Workshop, reflect the profound importance of the work we do as public architects. Workshop case studies will focus on New York City, illustrating the wide-ranging role public architects play in shaping the built environment in one of America’s greatest cities. Public architects play these roles throughout the US—in cities large and small, at local, state and federal public agencies, for park districts, utilities, universities and more.

Public Architects Workshop: The Public Architect as City Builder

By Lee Solomon, AIA

The Public Architects Knowledge Community will be sponsoring a full day Pre-Convention Workshop event on Wednesday April 26th, entitled WE203 - The Public Architect as City Builder, from 8:30am to 5:30pm, at the AIA 2017 Conference on Architecture in Orlando, Florida. We hope that both public and private Architects, as well as, members of the associated Architectural community attend this unique event. There promises to be many opportunities to learn more about the expectations of the architect working on civic infrastructure, new buildings and renovations of existing buildings. As the new federal administration takes shape, there will be many new challenges that the architect is tasked with managing to achieve the essential technical and community engagement objectives.

The long and winding road to Fellowship – part 2

By Ed Gauvreau, FAIA

When I left off at Part 1, I was almost ready to make the submission for Fellowship. Just a few more morsels concerning the process…

The AIA DC Chapter Fellows Committee had its last working session and submission review two weeks before the FAIA submission deadline. At that point, one should have the 98 percent solution in place and deal mostly with finishing touches. Remember that it is YOUR submission – unless you have made a grave mistake, input should be to make enhancements and tweaks, not a major overhaul.

What was interesting to find out that two weeks before the deadline, half of the AIA DC group had still not registered on the AIA Fellows website. My public sector mind immediately flickered “oh you poor fools!”

Urbahn Medal Group holds first summit

In the early afternoon of March 6, 2017, several past Urbahn Medal recipients came together on March 6, 2017, for an inaugural summit in Washington, D.C., to continue the way forward for collaboration among architects working in and for the public sector.

The Urbahn Medal, named in honor of Max O. Urbahn, FAIA, is awarded annually to a member of the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) for distinguished performance in the field of architecture. Urbahn was a former President of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) who had profound influence upon thousands of architects as well as engineers across both AIA and SAME communities during his long professional career from the 1950s through the 1990s. The first SAME Urbahn Medal was awarded in 1996 to Harold L. Adams, FAIA, RIBA, JIA.
