In the second installment of this six-part series, architect/author Jim Atkins, FAIA, takes a closer look at a magical place in the Pennsylvania hills along Bear Run Creek—a setting worthy of the renowned architecture that would come to grace one modest but not insignificant waterfall. He explores the interactive and often conflicting personalities of Edgar J. Kaufmann Sr. and Frank Lloyd Wright, two successful, driven men who shared the common desire and goal of creating Fallingwater. Their sometimes volatile, yet codependent chemistry was likely a necessary ingredient for producing the most celebrated house in America.
