HKS Founder Harwood K. Smith, FAIA, Dies
Harwood K. Smith, FAIA, who nurtured HKS Inc. from a one-person Dallas-based studio office into a national architecture and engineering firm, died from heart problems December 8 at 89. Full Story

Fine Design Honored in the Motor City
AIA Detroit acknowledged nine new projects, two buildings standing the test of time, and four individuals at the chapter’s annual awards program in late November. “These projects represent some of the best work of Detroit area architects,” said AIA Detroit President Jeffrey Hausman, AIA. “The winners include the very large—the Northwest WorldGateway by the SmithGroup—to a tiny garage/studio in Royal Oak by Thomas Barrie Architects.” Full Story

Moynihan Feted for “Guiding Principles for Federal Architecture”
“Design must flow from the architectural profession to the government, and not vice versa.” This fundamental ideal, espoused in a one-page memo from the Ad Hoc Committee on Federal Office Space, reached President Kennedy in 1962. Penned by Daniel Patrick Moynihan, Hon. AIA, then a young assistant labor secretary, it shaped the course of federal architecture for more than four decades. Full Story

Nonresidential Construction Recession Expected to Continue Into 2003
Nonresidential construction activity will likely see its steepest annual decline in a decade when the final 2002 numbers are calculated. This comes on top of a drop of almost the same magnitude in 2001 and a small dip in 2000. All told, nonresidential construction slumped almost 20 percent from the end of 1999 through the end of 2002, according to construction contract figures from McGraw-Hill Construction. Full Story
